I have recently had an out burst of swollen legs with my horses!! Two of mine have had over the past few weeks either one or two swollen back legs and today I have come onto the yard and found another of mine (who's never had any swelling before) and a livery horse with a back swollen leg!! Orginally i thought it was down to lack of exercise so I turned the first 2 out but they were then worse the next day. They don't appear to have banged them (no scratches/marks ect, also too many cases now to just be that) and there arn't many flies about around here at the moment, the water mains also seems fine and the four horses are on different hard feeds to each other! I can't think what could possibly be wrong! Does anyone have any ideas??!

Amy

There must be something in the air in our area as my boy had a slight swollen leg over the weekend. I still took him to the show at Great Eccleston because it did go down and there was no sign of lameness but I have noticed some morning him just standing in over night his legs do slightly swell and as you have said with no real signs as to why.

Once had a mare with all four legs swollen. Vet thought it was probably a severe allergic reaction to something, perhaps bee stings. He treated her with anti histamines and she was back to normal next day.

hi, no scabs that I can see.. but i've been thinking and does anyone think flies could be the cause of the swollen legs? Can they carry around infections strong enough to cause this, because the swelling is bad particularly in 3 of them, id say upto twice the normal size. Also two of them have had this for 2 weeks now so it's dragging on a bit and one of those has been v. off and out of character such as v. dosy behaviour as if a twitch was on him/ trembling a bit at times! Very strange happenings.. I would call the vet out (he won't comment at the moment without seeing) but my recent experiences have been that he has visited and been v.expensive with no real explanation! So I might try some fly spray and eliminate that first!! Any similar stories/cure or advice would be great!

If you're not happy with your vet change to another If these were my horses and it was going on this long combined with the other symptoms you mention---trembling etc.-- I would definitely get the vet out.

Sometimes legs swell up as a symptom of various viruses.

My TB mare Brooklyn has got one hind leg that occasionally swells right up like an elephants leg, and one year oozed a yellowy serum. Sometimes it is so bad she can hardly walk.
She has white socks and has suffered from mud fever in the past.
It blew up a week ago and she struggled to walk, I treat her with a course of baytrill and finadyne paste from my vet. It certainl;y reduces the swelling and makes it more comfortable for her. I find it better to leave her out because standing in just makes it swell more.

If this were my horses , I would get the Vet, do blood tests, check, check and check again all their grazing for St JohnsWort/yew/oak/anything toxic. Swelling is usually in reaction to trauma, but when it is affecting more than one leg and/or different horses it is usually due to a reaction to contact or ingested irritant ...or poison. I don't want to alarm you unduly but I think you have to be looking for the cause rather bthan how to ease the swelling itself as it may be a symptom of something serious. Hope not, but get the vet ( another vet if your not impressed with the last one)better to be safe than sorry. Do keep us informed.Good luck
