On Tuesday I ordered chilled semen to arrive today for Passionaate. It left the clinic yesterday at 1pm - so far so good - from Belgium it went to Germany which is abit odd usually it flies direct from Brussels. However it arrived this morning at 05.49 am at East Midlands - yey !!!! So close but yet so far cos then some dim witted braindead idiot put it on a plane to Sweden  and that's where it is heading presently all dying nicely as I type  It's difficult to know whether to laugh or cry but have decided on just rocking back & forth moaing quietly !!! DHL.....love 'em !!!

We used to ship some from ireland treated it like ilegal imagrants! sneaking it in the boot of the car on the ferry to avoid the damage of the airport luggage! lol must be mad! |

A vets visit, an ovuplant and 290 euros to collect & ship it's not worry it's yet another ruddy great bill with absolute nothing at the end of it ....... again !! DHL wouldn't have a problem with illegal immigrants they'd deliver them and their family guaranteed by noon !!  |

I know but you never know it might take yet!
And It can fail even if nothing goes wrong! I know it doesnt help when it does.
We used to do a 24 hour round trip once mare was starting to ovulate we'd get in the car and run for the ferry! ringing round to get a last min trip!
then with no sleep we return! and then the vet would say sorry your going to have to do it all again! nothing worse!
The nightmares of breeding! You must be mad!
It will be worth it in the end though Im sure!

Huh DHL!! Envelope sent Sunday morning from Abu Dhabi guaranteed Monday delivery here but ..... not here yet and needed tomorrow for a very important meeting in London. Not semen thank goodness as contents won't go off but if not here today by end of working hours, will have to cancel the meeting - there will be some very upset people if meeting cancelled who would have had to come from different places round the world. Maddening .

Oh God, I so know how you are feeling dont mention shipping to me! T and T got the connections wrong for us the first time , so cycle 1 gone, cost vet, plus collection, cycle 2 and 3 missed because they fell on weekends when there is no collection, cost vets, ( even though it was their mistake) so we are now on cycle 4 ,most of the summer gone and we haven't had a sniff of the semen yet it is going to cost so much by the time I get this foal it will have to be wrapped in cotten wool I say good old natural covering any day |

Hi Delyth!! UUUGGGHHH When we shipped semen in the USA, I always used Fed X, and insured the Equitainer and 'contents' for $1000. At least then you could claim a refund to cover the vets/collection charges, for the customer. I do the same thing here with the Royal Mail Special Delivery. It doesnt cost much extra, and so far they havent messed up!! I dont know about shipping to Europe though.....probably better to drive it over in the car!!LOL |

| Oh no what a nightmare and like you said, very costly! I was very lucky last year because the day after I had the semen delivered there was a postal strike. If my mare had waited another day to be ready the semen would have sat gradually dying in some postal depot somewhere! |

l have decieded l should have been a vet...what ever we do the vet makes money [lots of it]
and even when they get things wrong we still have to pay them to tell us the bad news! [like try again next month!]

When I was in Texas with Christine in April, she ordered chilled semen from Ca using Fedex, to be delivered to a Vet Hospital in Denton. Went to collect it the following morning (a Saturday), the bimbo behind the desk went to look, said she couldn't find it and wasn't prepared to go back and have another look, just told Christine to come back on Monday! Christine phoned her Vet, who then rang the Hospital and bimbo didn't even apologise when she came back through to reception with the container! Very nearly missed the mare's cycle...thanks to ignorant people!

Delyth, I would never go there again. Apart form all the obvious, ie not getting it on the right day you then can have the added suprise that the semen you ordered is not actually the semen you asked forcan-o-worms here |

Was it insured?
I fail to be surprised after buying a downhill mountain bike (quite expensive) on ebay from a guy in Ireland and having DHL then lose it, deny all knowledge of it, etc, only for it to turn up in Sweden. And the seller only knew because some kind person at some post place in Sweden called him to say "I think we've got your bike here". DHL hadn't a clue where it had gone.
If they consent to ship the stuff (semen), they should do so aware of the time constraints upon delivery I think.

They ought to at the very least let you pay a little extra for 'consequential loss' as Royal Mail do here - that way you could claim all your costs back if they cock it up (so to speak).

It costs so much to breed a foal by chilled semen, you couldn't afford to sell it if you wanted to,
I have one more breeding and I know it is going to cost the earth, they never cycle as you wnat them to and if they do, some idiot loses the semen or the vet gets held up,
I have come to the conclusion the only way with AI is: take your mare to the AI centre and order frozen semen,

Well it got here !! Luck was with me it seems - someone had horses understood the urgency !!! So I've inseminated her and can safely say this is the last time - too stressful !!
Sue, I'd forgotten your episode and made me feel quite sick. Did you ever receive compensation ??
I hate frozen semen too. I don't like sending the mares away so chilled seemed the perfect solution. I did get frozen from the same horse last year though - 4 attempts all perfect except for a pregnancy !!!!
Thank you for the offer of the van Kim I really appreciated it.
Lynda - have you had any joy at all with your AI ??

Antigua came into season wednesday so by the time I can order the semen, which is monday for tuesday it will be too late again
I have two foals by AI but it is a costly game, I have decided to keep my WH Justice colt as my future stallion,

These companies really are dreadful. Last year, I was delivered an enormous box full of yacht parts with an invoice of over £11,000 It was sent from somewhere in Spain and meant to be delivered to someone else in Spain, so goodness knows how it made it to London and had my name on it I just don't know how they can get away with it.
Anyway, glad to hear its now with you so will keep my fingers crossed for you (and everyone else)

Delyth, short answer.........no compensation, yet. It has gone legal.
Funny thing is one of the foals born in this country with sire unknown, has just been sold on this site?!! under geldings. We think the sire was a warmblood.
That's the beauty of frozen semenyou can never ever be sure you are getting what you have paid for.
In fact we got two different stallions semen in our straws, what about that???
Being honourable, honest or just owning up to a mistake is something no one wants to do anymore.
Sorry to sound bitter. I am.
I forgot to add that all this did not happen in the UK. Plus the collection station also collects Bull semen, so we were very lucky not to get a moo cow instead of a warmblood foal. |

| well on this subject got to say i tryed AI all last year with Amy my show pony mare, after 10 visits by the vet and numerous inseminations and a very fed up mare, i called a halt!!! this year i just kept an eye on her when she was just coming into season popped her along to the stud and she was duely covered and back home three days later! only then did i called the vet at 17 days post service and she was thankfully tested in foal!!!! i am not knocking AI as i have used it before with no problems, but i think we have to be aware that if it does not work it can be mega expensive and very invasive for your horse!!! Oh what a pain to say the least.
Delyth, hope you dont mind, but have copied and pasted your post and sent it to my daughter, Rowena, who works for DHL in Glasgow. She covers for Edinburgh and Aberdeen, so hopefully, she will pass it on to her bosses. Not that it will do much, but one just never knows especially if the know its being posted on a Forum. Certainly not good for business! |

Been there, done it and got the t shirt.
Semen arrived late because of bad weather in Germany so other half waiting at Heathrow to collect.
Vet decided to use said semen as it was till viable but warned us liklihood of success was small
Mare scanned at 16 days Vet certain not in foal so jabbed to bring back in for Monday Tuesday. Mare scanned again Monday to see how she was coming along and lo and behold she's in foal. Trouble is jab will probably make her lose it. Course of regumate to try to prevent but no joy, foal gone on next scan.
3 further attempts that year and three the next with no success and vet commented that there was a marked deteriotation in the semne quality
Finally decided to try natural and mare took on second attempt. We now have her daughter born two weeks ago.
For me AI is a wonderful thing when it works but very expensive when it goes wrong.
