Well after a LONG time of "intending" to take my Barmy Border Bit, Bryn to doggy classes.... AT LAST we are signed up and learning to walk to heel, sit, wait ( VERY important for HIM!) and so on PROPERLY.....and unlike the DREADFUL experiences we had when I tried to take him to puppy classes which were chaotic and had snappy Jack Russells ( not that I dislike JRs, just the couple that kept attacking my puppy!!), he's doing REALLY WE!!!!!!!!!!!

Every morning after breakafast, I walk him around the woods here and practice sit and wait and come....and he's really catching on!!

Alf , my GSD with the pancreatic defficiency seemed to feel he was missing "something" ever time Bryn's gone out all excited, so I've started again with him ~ not at classes....yet....we'll see how his health is......but just around the woods and he's loving it!!!

Of course, I now have dreams that Bryn and I will go to Crufts, WOW the crowds, become obdience stars, do the doggy dancing stuff, fly around the agility courses as if jet propelled and have everyone on their feet.......oh alright then.....he may just make the Christmas obedience show, novice class..... at our local club!!

All the same, I'm proud of Bryn....and Alf of course!

Has anyone here competed with DOGS in any discipline?

Have you ever won any classes or prizes with your outstandingly obedient pooches....or do you have a complete doggy dunce who doesn't want to know!!!

Well done! I keep intending to take my mad and barmy border terrier to classes but never seem to get there!! We need to do some serious work on recall, as in when I would like her to come back, not when she wants to strut back lol!!! Will have to start looking, keep us posted on your success!!

well we did the agility class at our local may fair, or rather my 8 year old daughter did with gyp, our border collie.
the first bit was great, up the ramp, down the other side, through the bendy poles. Then came the blue barrel with holes at both ends. Saskia climbed in but no dog. Some frantic pulling, resulted in gyp laid on he back feet in the air, total submision. In the end OH came to the rescue tilted the barrel up stuck the dog in the top, and lifted the barrel up.
They managed a couple more obstacles, until the water, OH ended up picking gyp up and plonking her in the middle of it. Entertained everyone though.
The best bit was the next dog, a yorkie puppy. The water was a paddling pool with water just above gyp's paws, but the poor yorkie was nearly swimming
Good luck, hope you have lots of fun

Sounds like you are getting on great guns!

I have been very lucky to train GSD's in particular in obediance since I was 9 - a shocking 20 years lol. We do agility for fun as well. In fact I think this has helped me loads with training the horses also as alot of things are tranferable and defeinitly tunes you in to looking at individuals and catering to them. Has also made me a real stickler for manners I have to say. It's only pet obediance we train in, nothing like what you see at crufts, and I am now going through an instructers course and been teaching in class for just over a year - absoloutly loving it!

I have been in the club Demonstration team for years and we made it to the special events ring at crufts for over 10 years, this year we were at All about dogs for the first time - doing 2 demo's on both days. My highlight would have to be leading the team in at Crufts several times and taking part in individual exercises with Dancer - the pooch on the straw bale in my signature. She is the second dog I trained from a pup and is now entering her 12th year but still loves to do the odd bit of obediance at home for fun. Off lead in front of lots of people she used to bounce her way round the ring, but stuck to my leg and super obediant a great dog to work with. You could almost see her smiling - of course now as an oldie she thinks she knows more then me cheeky monkey lol
We have tests at club and I have won with her, and more recently with my Dad's dog Floyd. He's very different - boys are much more out for themselves I find so more work needed on being a team lol.
Dancer and I have competed outside - but she blew something silly everytime, and always with tail wagging! Such a shame as her litter brother competed at crufts!! But think I just got a best friend.

Good luck and keep us updated with your progress!

Alicia

Sounds brilliant!

Both our dogs go to classes, with varying levels of sucess!

Floyd is an adult - we got him when he was 6 - and isn't the smartest tool in the box. He's done his KC Good Citizen awards, Bronze and Silver. Gold is taking a bit of work though.....

Daisy is now 20 weeks old so has just started in the puppy class. She's very timid around other dogs so we're working hard to bring her out of her shell. She's bright as a button though so hopefully she'll do her Good Citizen as well.

We're not really interested in doing obedience or agility. Just want to ensure our dogs are well-mannered and nice to be around.

They're both Staffy crosses and both gorgeous!

I haven't trained dogs, but ever since I was little I've wanted a collie to train and do agility with, I love watching agility at crufts

Good luck with your dog Wyllow :-)

One of our collies doing 'obedience' just for fun:

"Here Fen" - said stupid 'Mummy' not realising small child was in the way!!!

and this one, little 'Minnie' just being a dog because she had been so badly scared by her previous experience with humans:

Both rescue dogs, and both 'untrained', but happy, loyal and loving dogs, and very occasionally obedient!!

Carla - absolutely love your collies (think I have said that to you before)

Wyllow, dog training is great fun. I have only just started back riding after a 25 year gap - but for about 17 years of that time without horses I did agility with my mutts. Spent all my time (and money) training, going to shows every weekend - some were weekend of even week long shows, It was great fun really loved it. Don't have time (or money) to do horsey and doggies (still have a few as retired pets tho)

One of mine that died last year was sooooooooooooo naughty - even though he competed (and won) at a high level, you couldn't let him off the lead at a show as he would just have to steal toys or make a nuisance of himself - so embarrassing. Once he ran around the rings, jumped over a large barbeque (that was cooking at the time), ran into the pavillon causing havoc until finally cornered in the ladies toilet. Another time, stole a pigs ear from a stall and ran around the rings. Oh just remembered another time ran into the ring, into the tunnel and met half way another dog who was competing - so funny they both came back out the way they went in. Lucky it was a friend who could laugh about it.
So, moral of the story is, just because they are well trained and can compete - they still embarrass you

Oh, dont start me off re: training.

I just love teaching folk to handle their dogs, and nothing is more pleasurable than seeing the partnership blossom and enjoy each other.

I really miss teaching class these days, but still have the odd few for private lessons here.

Fleece will do everything, always fast, and keen, although a little vocal, shes 11 now, We lost a lot of wins due to her singing!!

Pup, Brooke, does all the basics, recall, stays, retrieves, D.C, etc, and has just started proper 'heelwork'.

Jill, bless her, just tags along, she was too old to start when I got her, so we just pretend so she does not feel left out.

I will get a photo tonight Carla, of the collies clearing up their dinner bowls. (saves me bending down)

Aaaahhh Pat, I really can't wait to see you lovely dogs again, especially Brooke - she must have grown alot since your last photos.

I wish you were closer to me, you could give me a hand with Minnie. Minnie is only just accepting a real 'fuss', and is still very wary of taking food from your hand, she will accept the food if you don't look at her or if you are sharing a some treats between her 'friends'. She has now been here 19 months. She loves to play with various objects, but only on her own, if you try to join in she gets scared and runs away. She is also still very wary of OH. So you can see the trouble I have trying to train her, in fact I haven't even tried because if she sees a lead she goes frantic trying to get away. Funny little dog, but she is happy, loyal, hyper-sensitive and an extremely good early intruder alarm. I can only imagine how wonderful she would have been had she not been so badly treated very early in her life.

I was hoping to bring her to Malvern to meet you and your lovely dogs, but it really isn't her 'scene'.

Carla, xx.

LOVE the photo of the flying collie!

I have one of each, both GSD's. The 8 month old bitch (totally unhandled for the first five months of life) is as sharp as a pin, but not easy as I am her human and absolutely no-one else exists in her world. She was incredibly easy to train, although she thought horses were for chasing until she got kicked in the mouth by the stallion for biting his heels...lesson learned, she is never anywhere to be seen if there is a horse around.

The 2 year old dog, well, when brains were handed out he was at the end of the line but got distracted by a butterfly and wandered off. It took almost a year to get him to learn "Down".He is an efficient deterrent as he looks and sounds very fierce but would lick any thief to death whilst showing them around the house. A lovable, Cowardly Lion.

It would help if either of them were food orientated, I have tried every titbit going, cheese, chicken, peanut butter you name it.......not interested.

Oh Pat, what a gorgeous, gorgeous family of dogs. They have really made my day

Brooke has grown so much, and what a wonderful, shiney coat. She's adorable and looks so full of fun, a real twinkle in her eye!!! Fleece is just gorgeous, and looks like a real livewire - just my type of collie and such a stunning colour and Jill, what a lovely girl, and reminds me of Fen - happy to just be around - loyal, loving and faithful

Thanks so much for sharing piccys Pat and looking forward to meeting them at Malvern.
