I decided Sunday was the day for me to attempt canter. All alone in the sandschool, did exactly what my NH instructor had shown me and went for it!! Couldnt believe it when my lovely man decided he wasnt going to do it. Bless him, he knows its not something I do and no matter how I tried, trot just got faster and faster. He was trying so hard to please that I gave in. More blown away by his wonderful consideration than my failure. I suppose the sceptics would say, he was just being lazy and opting out, but I did exactly what my instructor had done the day before and in exactly the same place.
Part of me is a bit annoyed because I would be cantering now but the other part is quietly smug with my wonderful arab!
Just have to work out how I'm going to go about it lol

Ah bless him maybe he felt you weren't quite ready to do it all alone. Perhaps if you try when your instructor is there it will all come together |

Only canter when you are 110% ready. Get a nice trot and then lift your arms and ribcage in a rolling motion to allow a canter. If it's too fast don't grab on (remember your in an arena, where can he go )just flow with the go and slowly give your aids for slow.Practise makes perfect Feel proud that your boy is looking out for you....it just didn't 'feel' right.....but it will...soon be smug...be very smug |

Ah bless you for putting your horse first..... A pole on the ground in the corner of your school will help with the canter process....
Good luck, and take your time....

Another way of looking at it.....what 'FEEL' are you giving your horse to go into canter? Imagine you are the horse (blind and words mean nothing...)..... where are his feet?..timing,feel,focus,energy....
I hope this makes sense??? |

I don,t know, maybe a lunge lesson with your instructor would make it clear to him that this is what you want from him,...? and you would be able to relax as you can forget about the control/speed/direction etc etc ......what ever you do, take it slow and SMILE!good luck |

Thank you all. Havent tried again, weekdays time seems to be lacking (and enthusiasm lol)
Paul, that's exactly what I did, even put the pole exactly where my instructor had it and he was doing it for her. Definately a brilliant idea, just need to get the brain actually wanting it lol!

Good tips for canter strike off and what a kind horsey you have. Opt to practice it with your instructor, or a lead horse, or out on safe track behind a lead horse. WES instructors taught me to makea kiss sound for canter (as well as lifting inside hand a little and sitting up) which really works.... good luck and be happy with your super-arab |
