Stick it out.when she starts napping DO NOT GIVE IN.Be prepared to wait there all day (as long as its safe obviously)until YOU WIN and she goes forward, until YOU say we turn around now.Give in once and it trebles the next time.We have had many a nappy pony in the past!!!!!Mostly mine !! or my friends when we were 9 years old. |

Try turning her round Lisa, then do rein back for several strides, turn her round again and ride her forward. Repeat as necessary till she gets the message she ain't gonna win! |

Hope you get it sorted. Stick with it if you can. Cant offer any advice only to say that we have had a few newbies on our yard that were used to hacking on their own in previous homes. When they test their new owner and win - that is usually the end of hacking alone. I am sure she will soon realise its no big deal.

groundwork... let her build trust in you as a leader... Raz was like that but when I taught him to trust me and that I'm not going to lead him him to danger he was able to hack out alone no problems.... now "we" don't like the saddle and the bit so "we" are napping about that! Even though he has won that argument, can't force him if he's uncomfortable! Have you led her out in hand on her own? That may help...????? |

I know how you feel. One of my ponies did it when I first had him. He could reverse as quickly as he could go forward (and that was fast).
One way is to have someone up behind you with a *****ly brush and allow the pony to back into the brush.Another way is to reverse the way you want to go they soon get fedup.
"I remember many years ago when I worked in show jumping ,Harvey Smith had a horse that napped and he was on the top of the moors, the horse stopped would not go forward so he got his wife to bring him a cup of coffee and a book and just sat it out. The horse got bored but never napped again".
Don't allow the horse to get away with it. You have to find out your way of solving the problem.

Going through the same thing jst now.my boy has been with me for 6 weeks and he will be with me til he dies BUT he jst plants himself in the middle of the road and wont walk on at all if he is on his own.He also does the backwards shimmy.I console myself with the fact that hes made so many nice new friends that he doesnt want to leave them.We resort to moving in 5 mtr circles til he gets bored and then we move on .In hand he is great so do groundwork as it is def helping us.Good Luck |

Lisa...good point there from TC...it really can make a difference. You saw Kizhi at Taunton but when she's in season I might as well leave her in the paddock
I'm good, thanks, hope you both are as well.

Well lisa b,I was obviously talking rubbish when i said beau was great from the ground cos today he planted himself outside his stable and refused to go in.Was about to tack the wee B****r up and ride him in when he decided to move in the right direction. As both our horses are new to us Ive decided that they are just seeing how pathetic us tiny humans can be.After that we took the easy option and schooled for half an hour instead of going out a hack and of course he was an angel......Why do we have horses????? |

Been there done that got the tee....
Don't give up - with all the advise above you'll get over it, or, as in my case, it will get less and less over the years!! Main thing is to not give up when they do it. Reversing is a great one, we've been reversing on the road quite a few times to the delight of the car drivers coming pass not having a clue why we're doing it!!
Establishing trust on the ground is also important. You might find that as she's new with you, she's testing you to see if you're a good enough leader. Persevere and show her that you're a great leader and that she'll have fun where you take her - and then she will be fine. |

Being dead thick but how do you do the PM thing cos cant work it out.......anyway in meantime......hacked out today with angypange from yard on her well behaved chloe.we had a trot which turned into a canter which in turn ended up with head flung up in the air and absolutely no control at my end.Now i dont want to resort to gadgety things but im now thinking of a running martingale.I dont have heavy hands and he only seems to do this in canter out on hacks.Dont want to hurt his mouth but i really had to take a hold today as it felt like he wasnt going to stop....why am i so crap???? So im going to sell him and buy a shetland, which i could perhaps carry on MY back when the going gets tough... |

Napping- go back to doing groundwork and build up trust , confidence in you and an understanding that when you say !we ARE going this way" she will understand. PMing....click on someones name, either on a topic they have replied to or go to members and find them there...this will take you to their profile, and on the lefthand side under their picture is "PMthis member" ..click on that and it will give you a box to put txt in, like a reply box....send it .VOILA! happy PMing |

I had the same with my old girl..Patience was the biggest thing, I did have to sit and wait once when she simple refused to walk on...When she did her mega reversing thing I just made her go back further, she soon worked out that she much preferred forward!! It did take time and bucket loads of patience as I simple couldn't risk getting angry with her but it did pull off..Also if you have only had her a few weeks, things will be up in the air for a while for both of you. Good luck with her. Leighx |

Just thought i'd add my own experience. I had a 14.2 (generally believed to be of arab origins but no breedign or history) that started to nap terribly whilst out on loan and they just let him. Prior to that he had napped a little but one smack on the bottom tended to persuade him i knew best! When he came back to me a spent a VERY long time completing a 40 minutes circular hack. He was very naughty and several times i though i may end upin a ditch but i perservered and it was worth it. I did teh hack again later that week and we had only 2 tantrums. Fromn there on he was fine.
I think trust comes into it to and as you say lisa b you have only had her 3 weeks. Good luck workign through this one. |

They always have to try it on don't they After first ensuring that napping is not related to any discomfort or pain (back/teeth check etc) and as people have said, establish a trusting relationship with them, the main thing is certainly to not let them get away with it. I've found if they back up turn them round and reverse in the direction you wish to go - it's much harder for them to resist and doesn't take long before they realise they've lost and would prefer to turn back round and continue. It may take a few times but eventually they should stop trying it on . |

Yep Karitaz, that's exactly what I was trying to advise in my earlier post, but it comes across clearer the way you've put it! This method definately does work |

thanks guys... nerys and me have sorted out alot.. as ive said she and i need to trust each other bless her... when i went to try her every day for 4 days we hacked out up there alone no probs every day each day doing diferent routes(all flat) ive worked out that she tries to get out of turning right out of ours cause it means a long ride and very hilly!!! so she napped.. if we went left she quite happily tootled on as its flat that way!! tee hee..acording to my savvy club she is a left brain introvert!!! i dont want you all to think shes a monster coz she really is adorable just a tiny prob that hopefully will soon be resolved through time and patiance.xx |
