I just wondered how many of you use show sheen all over your ridden horses including the saddle area? I have asked one friend who currently shows and she doesn't miss out the saddle area and has had no saddle slipping problems. A lot of you must do both in-hand and rdden classes so hopefully you can spare the time to pass on your advice and experiences.
Many thanks, Val

I personally would not put coat shine on the saddle area, even the products without silicone are extremely slippy, wouldnt be worth taking the risk IMO

I agree Lucy! I once watched a man on a hunter in a ridden hunter class cantering around in quite a large arena with a fair number of others, and he just slowly slid around the horse's tummy. There was nothing he could do; no stopping it! He thudded in a very undignified way to the floor (was OK). It was a very valuable lesson to me to go easy on all the washing, conditioning and preparations around the saddle area - doubly so if you have a lovely soft, sheepskin numnah for instance... Just imagine! |

Limpet non slip saddle pads are totally invaluable! I use coat shine all over Crystal, and a good non slip saddle pad is a must! My friend, though, once put a wee bit too much show shine on her pony, and couldn't vault on in the bareback gymkhana races!!!! |

I used the Ultra finishing spray on Benny at HoCon earlier this month. He was glossed and sprayed to an inch of his life for his in-hand class and when he finished that class my daughter tacked up and went straight in the young rider class with him. Saddle didn't slip an inch - just make sure your girth is tight enough!!!

DEFINATELY NOT - do not use on the saddle area and anywhere near the reins - not a good idea esp when judge about to ride and grab hold of slippy reins |

Hi Val i use supreme show products there great stuff i put it all over the night before then put them in the full body rugs the lycra ones and it takes the slip away but leaves the shine it works for me and i do mostly ridden with my horses but i also use a sheep skin numnah which i think grips good and never had a problem yet hope this helps :) Bev |

I use Canter Coat shine, or Absorbine Show sheen....both are excellent....and the finishing touch spray is brilliant for touch ups. Cheaper option is Mr Sheen polish, sprayed on a cloth, and wiped over the horse just before you go in the ring....works just as well! |

Thank you everyone who took the time to reply. Bev has made me realise that some of us apply our show sheen on the night before a show after bathing and others apply at the show. I apply the night before and use cloths to remove dust from the coat. I always use the half rubber dressage reins - having once been in a championship in a downpour with newly cleaned reins on a horse unsettled by the rain - suffice to say lesson learned. So basically how many people would ride on show sheen applied the night before? |

no...for me, it has to go on just before I go in the ring. I do use it after a bath the day before, but will reapply before the class. |

I don't use show sheen on my horse's coat at all, only in the mane and tail
Work & that coat & you shouldn't need to either
But no definately not on the saddle area. The ridden Judges will hate it if your saddle doesn't feel secure |
