Hi anyone out there that can answer this. My dog's been having fits for a few months and is on 4 phenolbarbitone tablets a day. He has taken to pooing on the carpet during the night when he didn't used to. He is also at this very moment trying to eat the pretend coal on the gas fire. Has he lost the plot? Thanks.

Have the Phenolbarbitone actually stopped the fits altogether? My sisters dog has epilepsy and is on both a high dose of Phenolbarbitone and also has Valium at night. Before he was diagnosed he did exhibit rather erratic behaviour. |

Thanks for the reply Lanabanana. The Phenolb has not stopped the fits, but he is calmer afterwards. The vet upped the dose from 2-4 tablets and said that should stop the fits, but it hasn't. He does seem to be getting crazier and clumsier. |

I don't want to worry you, although I'm sure the possibility has already occured to you, has your vet suggested that there may be an underlying cause such as a brain tumour? |

Hi Alix,
Having been there myself, it doesn't sound too good to me. My Boxer did exactly the same thing.....My vet said as he was 12 yrs old the most likely cause of the sudden onset on epilepsy was a brain tumour :((( Every fit they have does more damage to the brain, hence the weird behaviour they exhibit. We had Rocky for around 3 weeks after he started the fits, he went down hill rapidly in the final week, not being able to get out to the garden etc. which is why we made the sad decision to let him go :(((( Worst day of my life :((((
So sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.....Best of luck to you and I really do hope that your vet can find a way to help your boy x |

Thanks Lanabanana and Angel. It has occured to me as my first pony died of one. I've booked him in for blood test tomorrow at vets. Thanks for the nice words. I am thinking the worst. Each dog we get seems to last a shorter and shorter time. Will let you know what happens. |

Thanks for the lovely words. The vet thinks it is a brain tumour, but we are happy with that because instead of losing him tonight we get another month possibly with him. He's not insured for neurological problems, but he's on steroids now which will shrink the tumour and keep him going for a bit longer. It was bizarre when we walked in there and the vet turned out to be the equine locum who comes from South Africa and has 13 arabs out there. The vet was asking me what Jema's (my mare)lameness turned out to be and my son and husband were nudging me to shut up and talk about the poor dog instead! Thanks again for the kind words, and well done for the diagnosis as well! |

I am so very sorry Alix :(((
From what you had said I knew it would not be good news.
My Rocky was with us for just over three weeks after he was diagnosed, we made sure it was the best few weeks he had........One morning he refused to eat and would stand over his water bowl but not drink, that night he struggled to get up, wetting himself when he did, he then staggered about the room stopping only at the walls. When he stopped at the walls he stood there wobbling, staring at the walls with a vacant look, when I looked him in the eye that night I knew he had gone and that his time had come so made that dreaded call at midnight......:((
You will know when the time is right for your boy, it will not make the decision any easier though. PM me if you need to talk. My thoughts are with you and your family Alix.........xx |

Thanks Guys. I am okay about it. I lost the plot and had to see a counsellor about 12 years ago when my first pony died of one. I'd had him 21 years and couldn't cope. This time I know what to expect, although I will be really upset when he goes. I've known lots of quite young people that have died of cancer. I think you get to my age and know the score. We are going to let him eat lots of food as he seems to enjoy that and give him the max amount of attention. Thanks again, it's nice to know there are people out there. If I look on the bright side, at least we will be able to give another dog a home when the time comes. |

(((HUGS))) I lost my elderly dog to lymphatic cancer about 6 wks ago and I must admit I too was pretty ok about making the decision when the time came. I was still sad, but i knew that she would only get worse and the time was right to let her go with a little dignity. On a happier note is your Jema the same one that is my dear departed Jiwans grand-daughter? I was trying to remember which AL member owned her recently I can't believe it's a year since we lost Jiwan. |
