My vet phoned me back last night at 8.30pm, not a good sign, to say that the lump that has appeared on Sheppi's hindquarters is cancer again. I am so sad as she had a lump removed 4years ago from the same area. She is 10 years old a collie x Jack russell, jack russell size collie colour. She was my salvation when my parents where splitting up and my guard dog against an abusive ex partner.
I feel so sad for her, she has done me so much good and I want to return the favour. She is going in ready to have the op on Tuesday, but vet will decide best course of action. She is well in herself and as lively as normal, but I have told the vet I am not willing to lose her on the table and I won't have her put to sleep as long as she is happy and not suffering. Vet then told me the op could cost £300 with the possiblilty of more should she need reconstructive surgery.
I want to keep her happy and well for as long as possible. I am so sad and confused of what to do

Hi Geena, sorry to hear this....
Nobody can tell you what to do but if it were me I would be guided by my vet. I would want to know what sort of chance she stood with the operation, what would be the prognosis without it. What sort of pain would she be in....etc etc. Sometimes you have to push these vets into a corner to get an honest opinion. Ask them what they would do if she was their dog.
I think that 10 is still relatively young and if an operation is the best option, I personally would give her the chance.
Please keep us updated.
Take care. |

We have just lost our dog to cancer around his bum. We were told that even if we operated it would grow back. We did the op even though it cost £300 and it gave him an extra 4 months of life.Like your dog he was fine in himself until 2 hours before we pts. The day he didn't want to go for his walk and just stayed in his bed was the day we knew he was starting to be in pain and it was time to say goodbye. We knew we didn't have long left with our boy, but we still had the best 4 months and £300 was worth that, even though it is a lot of money to us.Personally I would give your dog the chance, she could still have another 4 years infront of her, and I'm sure you can arrange to pay the money in instalments if it is a problem. Good luck, it is a hard decision, that only you can make. Let us know how things go.((((hugs)))) |

What a fantastic little dog, seeing you through the bad times; I can see how you are struggling with this bad news. Poor little thing. However she doesn't know the implications of her condition and I think you and she should enjoy what time you have. It may well be that this op will clear things up and she will have a good proportion of her life yet to come. I'm sure the vet will realise you need an honest prognosis at all times.
She sounds a wonderful companion. Very best wishes for her full recovery! |

Geena, I am so sorry to hear this and know how you feel.
I had a lovely collie cross (Jenny), she was my true and loyal companion after my marriage broke up, best friend and playmate to my boys as they grew up and guard dog whilst I slept alone at night.
You are returning her kindness and loyalty to you simply in how much you care for her and all you are doing. You really couldnt do anymore. Dont beat yourself up, she couldnt have had a better life than with you. Try and stay positive that she will come through this and will her on all the way. She will stay with you as long as she can (believe me).
Lots of love and positive thoughts for you and truckloads of get will wishes for your darling Sheppi Sandie xx |

Sending you hugs and healing vibes to Sheppi, she sounds like a wonderful companion.
Collies and their crosses are tough little critters, and I am sure Sheppi will do her best for you, as she has always done.
Thinking of you.
Carla, xx. |

I would go for the op personally, providing your vet thinks there is a good chance of a getting a reasonable result, she sounds like she's a toughy and 10 is not really that old for a smallish dog. We lost our oldie about a month ago to lymphatic cancer. Our vet didn't think she was up to the surgery and wasn't optimistic that she would even survive the anaesthetic, but she was some years older than Sheppi and a bit frail. She went downhill quite quickly and I think she was probably ill before the outward signs of the disease became apparent. Whatever you decide I'm sure you will do your best for her, she sounds like she has given you so much. I'll be thinking of you and Sheppi. xx |
