Know how you feel - had to do the same with my beloved first pony when he was 33 . So much more than just a horse sometimes you find your soulmate.
I think it must be easier if they look ill or old and tired, rather than looking great but having some inoperable condition that you can do nothing about.
Sorry to hear that you had to say goodbye. I am sure that you have many wonderful memories of your faithful and dear friend. Our thoughts are with you.
