My cleaver little Silky Bantam has hatched one of four eggs, two were just hatching so left them to it and one unfortunatly died due to broken egg.
How do you sex them without causing physical discomfort and making me squirm
The hatched one was dry and very pretty bright yellow with a couple of black spots so I think its from one of my light sussex and Reggie (hybrid welsomer cross rodesian red).
I am just worried as we already have Reggie and Rockie, Reggie's son, don't think us, or horrid neighbours could tolerate anymore and I am not sending any boys to be bird of prey fodder either

Very good kirsty
I have tried googling it but maybe I am not looking in the right places as they all seem to state the intrusive version
Failing that I was going to take them to Devon County with their adopted mum and see if anyone in the chicken tent could tell me |

Sexing chicks can be really difficult, and certain breeds are more difficult than others.
As they grow normally the males combs are bigger than the females but this is just a general 'rule of thumb', hope it helps |

Hi, my white bantam silkie hatched four eggs out of eight - I thought all was fine when they had hatched but the black one and the off white one both died within ten days of being hatched i think it might have been something to do with the very cold snap we had at that time.
I too would like to know how to sex them as I don't really want to keep another cockerel - so I am watching this post with interest!!

Sorry to hear your two died, but at least you have the others.
When all eggs have hatched I encourage them to go out so I can clean and disinfect the house let it dry and put frsh easibed down. Sadly they have to be kept in a run thanks to the fox and the nesting birds of prey. The buzzards even tried their luck to take Reggie and he is 9lb fiesty cockeril needless to say he gave them what for
If I find out a nice way will let you know, only propblem is they are not batantam babies she just helped hatch them, they will be a mix of Reggie, as said above, and either Black Rock or Light Sussex so pick and mix at the mo! |

Color sexing is the newest method of determining the sex of a day-old chicken. In 1975, commercial breeders were developed and the day-old chickens of these breeders can be identified as hens and roosters by the color of their plumage. The plumage on day-old hens is generally white while the plumage on day-old roosters is brown.

I would like to state for the record that I DO NOT have a purple bum !( actually mine has 40odd little circles drawn on it at the moment from my accupuncture...!) AND ..It wasn't mine hen that had a purple bum either...... but I do have a Prof.Falconer next door who knows all things "bird" she may be able to help, I will ask her at supper time tonight and get back to you if she can help. |

Okay ...here goes... I have looked at the photos of sexing by feather development and honestly....I can,t see any difference. It says that the cocks start to show later feather development and they carry their tails a little higher. And I have been reliably informed that trying to sex by wing feather development is practically impossible ...! even for an expert! so....the best thing is to wait till they are chasing their sisters around, and squabbling...and then you will know who the boys are ! Sorry we can,t be of any more help. |

I wouldn't have a clue with silkies but breeds with conventional feather have a difference between male and female. the feathers as they form on their backs are usually easy to see, males are sort of pointed and spear shaped, hens have a flatter edge to them a square look.
When the tail feather develope hens have a sort of flat fan like appearance, males tend to get the larger droopy feathers. Males sometimes develope spurs on their legs, and the comb can be far more advanced by even ten days old.
I had some lovely little lavener aracanas, they looked alike until some started to crow! |
