Hi I have always thought you could show a novice in a snaffle but at the show i went to watch on sunday the novice enteries had pelhams or double bridles on Just wondered if it had changed? Thanks Charlotte
I watched the open stallion class on Sunday, and one of the stallions was shown in snaffle. I thought in open classes it had to be double bridles or pelham bits? Georgina
You dont have to show in a double or pelham for open but it is preferable. It is however important you show your horse in a bit that they are comfortable in. there is no point putting a horse in a double if they dont get on with it. For novice classes I like to see a horse in a snaffle especially if they are young, they dont need over bitting to early. I think it is a shame these days that many people in Novice classes do not ride in snaffles, but bring horses out in pelhams or doubles. For affiliated dressage you must ride in a snaffle up until elementary and they have recently changed the rules so that you can now ride at Grand Prix in a snaffle - and I have see people do this!
