I have been away from the showing circuit for 7 years and was surprised how the costs have risen in that time. Im going to Meyercough College in a few weeks and just to enter one class has cost me £52 with stabling charges. I have just done my entry for Wales and West (with stabling again) and that is £48. This is all without the cost of transport, hotel rooms (I dont have my own lorry, but can see its advantages now), plus cost of petrol/diesel for my own car. I was just looking at entering Towerlands and the price for the stable is the same as B&B at a nice hotel for myself and my hubby. Entry fee is £60 plus 2 nights stabling @ £85 per night, just for one junior gelding. They say people with horses must have money, I have to differ, people with horses never have money!! How does everyone feel about showing costs? Georgina

Yep bluddy expensive i think, and is what is going to suck all my money away this summer, hence why "going out" for me goes straight out of the window!!! I'm broke already and the season hasn't even started! |

I never thought of it that way - seems to me that a large proportion of the cost is for stabling, which I guess the venue are paid and it doesnt go into the show coffers? Wales and West have kept their stabling cost down the £25 per night, some are charging much more. I guess its swings and roundabouts really. It was just that being away from the circuit for a few years, I now come to realise that prices have gone up in everything! Georgina |

A "Good Value" weekend will be the Bahpac \ Bacs weekend at Arena UK
Stabling £35 for the whole weekend - Friday to Monday
Bahpac Classes - £10
BACS Classes £17.50
With a glamerous "Evening Performance!" both days - loads of fab prizes - & even £500 worth of Prize money on BACS day!
So if you are lucky enough to qualify as an amateur you have 2 shows for one lot of travelling!

I'm going to Myerscough as well...and for two classes, plus membership, few new bits of tack, and my horsebox hire will come to about £200....This is precisely why I don't do much showing now..not because I don't want to, I love showing, but it's just getting too expensive for the one horse owner/amateur to actually compete.
PS..BAHPAC was straight qualifying last year...do we have an entry fee this year? |

The cost of showing is expensive, but then again, the cost of everything is expensive nowadays! Show organisers try and keep competitors costs to a minimum but they are faced with huge overheads and more often than not struggle to make a profit or break even! Its abit of a catch 22 really. I guess it was just a shock of being away for a few years, then coming back - i expect if I had continued showing from 2001 til now, I probably wouldnt think about it. Well its only money at the end of the day, and I'm doing something I enjoy (well hope I will - will see on the 27th - my first show). Madmare - what classes are you doing at Myerscough? Georgina |

Hi Madmare , yes last year the entry to bahpac was "free" as in Mike stood all the entries, but we had originally intended to charge.
This year due to the cost of the arena etc etc we had always intended charging - I asked a lot of competitors from last year about these costs and 95% said £10 was still "cheap" but I didn't want to put the cost higher, bareing in mind at Bahpac the Champions win £50, an Equus Eye trophy to keep, and many other things, as well as prizes for Reserves and goody bags to 6th place in all classes I don't think it's bad value for money
Like Jayne said it is a great value weekend with the stabling only £35 from Friday through to the Monday, not per night |

hishow costs HAVE risen but sadly so has everything else ..the biggest thing is cost of diesal and higher maintence costs for horseboxes etc ..that were its hit me this year
on a happier note ! now that BACS is closer! if i qualify i WILL attendand yes it is good value for money i think when you weigh it up to 'normal' shows its a bargain!
i have to admit i wasnt going to try as it is a long way and would have been just too expensive this year currently iv'e started a new job and a new flat needs decorating and kitchen putting in blah , blah so it was a case of some things have to be sacrificed i am definately more picky were i go this year and way up the pros & cons before sending off my hard earned cash..will that £50 buy some nice stuff from habitat ha ha
but , like others have pointed out some people spend it on a BNO so roll on the season i am looking forward to it come what may! xx |

I always seem to wake up at the shows with a hangover!!!
Its an expensive business thats for sure, i try and spread sending my enteries off otherwise its a huge shock to the bank balance. Oh yes and dont do what a friend did once and at the end of the year add up all her enteries- she nearly died of shock at what she had spent!
On a brighter note, a lot of the county/ mixed shows do give prize money- ok so its not the same as showjumping, racing etc but every little bit helps! |

Not bothered, after all £10 for a championship show is exceptionally cheap! I remember one show was over £40 per class...and that offered no prize money!!!!! |

I was told to decide on my budget and plan accordingly. That went out of the window, when my budget went well over when I included the UKIAHS Towerlands show. I dont think I will be adding up my expenses this season, and I certainly wont be telling him indoors what Im spending! Then again he has his football season ticket and his cars! Even though it has been a wake up call for me money wise, Im looking forward to the shows! Georgina |

On the subject of prize money we would happily offer if we were allowed to do do. It is an Ecaho rule that no prize money is given.
Obviously this does not affect the ridden but we wish to be even handed over all of the classes.

Yvonne, The prize money issue is odd as i remember at the international arabian horse show (lingfield, merrist wood and fontwell) which was an ecaho "b" show they used to have prize money to fifth place?!?!?! Why is it different for other shows, that was run under ecaho and their rules?!? Alethea Aristotle Arabians aristotlearabians@hotmail.co.uk |

Rafa...I'm in the Open ridden HOYS mares class, and the amatuer owner/rider Mares class...both with Crystal....should be fun, she's bouncing off the floor at the mo...can see me leaving burning hoofprints down the arena, and a horse shaped hole in the arena wall!
I'll only be there 3rd May...come and see me...you'll recognise Crystal! |

3 years ago Mooky was shown as a yearling and I made the mistake of adding up what it cost at the end of the season and it was over £3500.00! He was away on a professional show yard from April to end of August, so of course that bumped the costs up massively but even still, it was a hell of a lot of money for 5 shows! All I can say is thank god he did well! |

I believe the rule changed after the demise of that show. We are no longer allowed to offer prize money, not that we would have the money to do so without sponsorhsip.
Prize money breeds corruption |
