Tell us who your insured with and what sort of experiences you've had following a breakdown or accident with your horsebox or tow vehicle & trailer, and did they get your horses home safe & sounds and the details..

We are with South Essex, we broke down twice, once with horses and once without. They were excellent and recovered the vehicle very quickly and the horses were transported to our choice of place. Georgina |

I have my lorry covered with ESS. I have not had to call on them myself but have used them when I was driving my friends lorry that was always seemed to be breaking down! The sole reason I now have my own ESS policy is because of the excellent service they provided, both transporting the horses back home and repairing a fault at a show. |

I am with NFU and when I broke down recently and rang RAC Commercial who deal with the breakdown, they said they had no record of me! Ten minutes later they rang back and said they did and that they would organise for the recovery to come out. By this time the police had arrived (we were on major A road on sharp bend) and called their recovery. After endless conversations between RAC and Police and me, the RAC called off my breakdown on the instructions of the police. I was then taken home by police recovery and received a bill for £210 for this!!!! Am quite livid as my own breakdown service then had to come out to look at the lorry and the guy said that in the event of the police demanding they use their recovery my breakdown should agree to cover the cost. GRRRRR....what is the point of spending alot of money on Gold Breakdown cover if you then have to pay for someone else to do it? Apparently the police in the area I am in are renowned for this.

Ann, I've heard of something similar to this before, a trailer with a horse in on the M5 and the trailer was damaged, the police were in attendance and the horse had to be unloaded and transported, but the breskdown recovery was taking ages to arrive, the police said if you don't get this horse off the motorway we will have the vet come and shoot it...the police wanted the carrage way cleared with out delay... It almost sounds a bit like the police dealing with a road accident, when my son go smashed up in his evo they just took over and called out the breakdown truck and had it towed away and cleared the road.
So do the NFU also cover the recovery of your horse if your trailer or horse box breaks down.??????
Hi Karen, bought any good mags lately.Did the police catch up with you on the motorway, did they cone your vehicle off...????
Georgina, can you tell us more, was it a horsebox or trailer and how did your horse get movedand did you have to wait long and what sort of vehicle picked you up.???
Aitethea, Did the NFU also move the horse, how did it go ???
Sally, Can you tell us how you got on with ESS.
Were all getting a bit itchy about breakdowns and moving horses...want all your experiences please. Thanks Sue |

Im with the NFU, and I must say with 6 break downs last year all to do with diesel blockage three of which in one Journey to Wales and West every time they were fantastic they called every ten mins to check if the horses were ok and if they needed a vet, every breakdown guy was so helpfull even came back to the showground next morning and renewed all of our filters make sure we got home.
I cant fault them, unlike ESS who left me stranded at the Strensham Services with a 2yo and a stallion on my own with Refugees trying to get into my lorry, couldnt get me transport all they could offer was a riding school for a stable, in the end my friends came to the rescue with there lorry and took us to there house while my lorry was fixed!!! |
