Hi I'm really ignorant of these things, I know my boy is a right mix of Polish,Egyptian,Spanish etc but I dont know how what strain means...??? His strain is Koheylan Krush hmmm??? sire line is Saklawi I (via Hadban Enzahi) and dam line is Dafina db (branch: Dafinetta). What do you make of him, Prince of Lightning is his name.... is on www.allbreedpedigree.com and http://sfnabern.schachvereine.de/pa-home/ahdb/result.php?link=true&searched=Prince%20of%20Lightning&number=0 ?
I am now thinking of loaning or leasing a mare for him from a selection of mainly Polish pedigree here in Ireland http://www.freewebs.com/oranarabians/salespage.htm as I would like a foal from him for my own use. He's bred a lot before I got him, but there are not a lot of arabs in Ireland to choose from. I was lucky to find him and he's an absolute gent to ride and handle.
Grateful for any help or advice on what kind of mare I should go for and also with the strain and lines / what they mean....
sorry for being so ignorant, but Prince is only my 2nd Arab and I am more clued in to TB lines
thanking you in advance Lena

If you want breed, you better look in the strain for quality of the dam line. In All breed, just look in the bottom-line, dam, grand dam, etc, etc. The strain is mostly crabbet. The line is indeed Siglawi but crossed with Spanish, Estopa and some Polish lines. I would try to find a match with the old and rear crabbet line, a daughter of MIKHAN OF PULPITS or something in this sphere. What do you want to do with the horse, sport? Show?

In Arabs, 'lines' usually refers either to one of the main breeding groups - eg, Russian, Crabbet, Egyptian, etc - or to individual horses within those groups. So a horse might be described as "tracing to Polish lines", or "a Polish horse with lines to Witraz".
Strain in Arabs refers exclusively to the tail-female (bottom) line in the pedigree. This is how the Bedouin tracked pedigrees, as they placed more emphasis on the mare. Whether the strain names really mean anything significant nowadays is up for argument - but you'll find plenty of people ready to discuss the question at leangth and with great passion . In most cases though, it's now just a way of designating the foundation mare - unless someone is actively breeding back into a dam line to consolidate its qualities.
You boy has a bit of almost everything in his pedigree, so I would say the best way of selecting a mare to go with him is to find one that complements his good features, and improves a bit on any weak points he may have. It's also worthwhile doing a bit of research to find out if he has any siblings, and if so, what they have produced when bred to various lines.
Hope that helps!
The Guinnesses have bred a lot of useful riding horses based on Dafina's line, so that is a good start |
