Veal was the topic and I was absolutely fine watching it up until they stunned the 1st baby calf, I then burst into tears and made my OH change channels!
I am not sure if my reaction was so extreme because these calves were 6-12 weeks old and I thought of them as babies I have seen slaughtering before, older cows and chickens/turkeys but it didn't make me feel as bad as I did last night
I would add that i saw a news item the other evening very briefly outlining the veal industry. They asked a celebrity chef (name I don't know but he does cereal adverts on TV) to cook both and say which was best. Baring in mind he was a British chef reporting on BRITISH veal he really slated it and said he preferred the pale continental stuff, tasted, looks and cooks better. I could have reached in the telly and throttled him. HE is the chef and it was up to him to make the British one better so that British people buy it!!!
I'm sure that this programm is on again next week but with a different animal? I won't be watching if it is :(((
They compared European Veal to ours last night and said that the calves are much bigger (when killed) and have more meat than the British.....:(( Also said that veal is by product of the milk industry which to be honest I didn't think about. Very sad what we do just to get cow's milk :((
My OH is a master butcher and can do the same. That was way before we met. I hasten to add that he now works for Morrisons stacking shelves over night and we are both very happy bunnies lol!
Many years ago when as a youngster on a skiing trip to italy we were given Veal nearly every other day, in between we had steak - a red raw lum of meat slapped on a plate and it does not take a genius to work out what it was - lets just say if veggie had been popular in those days would have converted as did not eat all week we even had veal sausages!!! Anyway any of you from a farming background will know that black and white cows produce black and white calves if they are bull calves they face two options be culled the day they are born or be sent to market shipped off to the continent and turned into veal - I dont agree with either option but as someone said we drink milk - unfotunately the bull calves are a by product of an industry - no calves no milk - ethics dont come into it. But in conclusion Veal is vile really cant see why people would want to eat it - never will again!
