Was shopping in the city centre this morning and I walked past the doughnut stand, the smell just transported me to a very sunny Malvern and beautiful Arab horses , it got me thinking do people smell a certain smell and get transported somewhere else

The smell of new mown grass, the scent of honeysuckle, the smell of rain on a pavement when the sun comes out to dry it, all conjours up thoughts of childhood, oh and the smell of palmolive soap, ohh those happy days |

Funnily enough I was idly thinking (but then forgot - menopausal memory) of starting a thread on 'the handbag smell' ! you will either know instantly what I mean, or not. My own handbag - the interior I mean - smells just like my mum's handbag used to when I was a kid - mixture of leather purse, coins, mints, perfume, tissues... It's so evocative and takes me back to 5 years old every time I think to get a good whiff. You have to really get your face down close though. Go on, have a go... |

I was wandering around the supermarket this afternoon and suddenly smelt - the smell of a particular mix of clean disinfectant/baby powder etc that we used to smell going into Mum's bedroom to see the new baby. She had all of us at home - we never heard a thing, just went in and saw this tiny, swaddled grub in the family cradle - and that lovely, clean, baby-scented smell!
Also the smell of new puppies, horses (!!), the fair (onions/toffee apples/candy floss) - and of course, some aftershaves that can still make me weak at the knees!!! |

Yes Tina..mine is........When i was 16 and started my first hairdressing job , my first employer used a lovely conditioner called "Wella" Herbal Anti - Oxident Conditioner ,it smells lurvley, and she had this at the backwash so i was solely in charge of all shampooing duties ,as i was chief shampooer...ha ha.........17yrs later and owning my own salon i use this conditioner as a "Treatment " conditioner so its extra money as it is rather expensive to buy,,,,,,,well it always sends me back to that first salon 1981 and my first year of hairdressin in that salon.....And every time i use it on my own clients i tell my clients that the smell of the conditioner reminds me of that salon,,and i am transported back some 27yrs arrrghhhh.. ..so YES...smells do remind you of things..........xx Lynne |

The smell of horses goes without saying whether they're sparkling clean, covered in poo, sweaty from exercise, just perfect. Even found myself stalking the horses and carriages in Central Park just so I could get a whiff of "horse".
Clinique Aromatics Elixir always reminds me of my Mam as she's worn it for years and it's sort of her signature perfume.
Macassar aftershave by Rochas (no longer made I don't think) stops me in my tracks, well it would if they still made it !

Yes, Rafa , it is the one near St. John's right next to the Everton and Liverpool shirt/scarf stalls, us scousers keep things close to our hearts together - our stomachs and our footi teams |

I love that new leather smell too! I used to love getting deliveries of saddles and bridlework when I had the shop. The smell of bacon cooking and real coffee reminds me of Sunday mornings when mum would cook a full English and make 'proper' coffee in a percolator on the cooker and of course the smell of horse, can't beat it! |
