I mentioned this in another topic and it immediately got me thinking if our wonderful creatures are at the root of it?? Anybody know where "hightailing" originated?

Just googled it and found this ......
To go as fast as possible, especially in fleeing: hightailed out of town.
Idiom:
hightail it
To hurry or flee.
[From those animals that raise their tails when fleeing.]

To high-tail "move quickly" is slang attested by 1890, from cattle ranches (animals fleeing with elevated tails)
