Legends say The Prophet's Thumbmark, a small indentation and a whorl of hair resembling a thumbprint found on the necks of some horses, especially Arabians is the sign of a good horse.
It is said to date from the time when the Prophet Mohammed, at the end of a long journey through the desert, had all his horses released to drink. To test their obedience, as they approached the much needed water, he called them back. Only five obeyed and these he blessed by placing his thumb on their necks. They are said to have founded the five best strains of Arabians.
My old palomino part arab, who sadly had to be put to sleep last November aged 27, had the mark. She was a real friend for 24 years so I tend to think it is the sign of a good horse.
What are your experiences of horses with this mark?

Hi
Yes my mare has one on her shoulder and she is so good in so many ways my friends say they don't normally like arabs but when they meet her they can't help but like her, and she is so brave as well I say this because about 5 years ago she had road accident but you would never know that if you rode her out on the road now.
So yes I believe the The Prophet's Thumbmark is a signe of a good horse and also of good luck.

My gelding has one on his neck and he is a darling. Hardly ever puts a foot wrong and is a safe, steady ride. Because he doesn't look like a typey Arab, people are shocked to know that he is one because of his temperament.

Anubis has 3 thumbmarks on his neck. One on the underside of his throat and another under his mane and one the other side.
He is the best horse I have ever met and love him to death. He is so quiet, brave and loving and I could not ask for anything more. |

Some "thumbmarks" can be caused by an old injury or a breakdown in muscle, so I have been told.
BUT, my old stallion, "Zeyn" had a thumbmark on his left shoulder - definitely not an injury, he was the most adorable character with a heart of gold and happy to be ridden all day - the more human attention he received, the happier he was!! Dolly has a thumbmark on her neck - again not an injury - loves children, but will be a diva with adults!!! Taj has a thumbmark on his side (flank), only visible in his summer clothes and if he is turning to the right - yet again, not an injury - wonderful temperament, although slightly exhuberent(bouncy), but full of love and loves attention, but would also die to protect you.

My filly has the 'whorls of lamentation' LOL....apparently she'll always be losing me money, and in olden times she would have been sold off like a hot brick. Personally....i lubb her to bits. I'm going to check her for a thumbmark tonite...may balance her bad luck whorls out LOL |

It's a total myth! There are thousands of wonderful Arabians out there (including many show and race winners) with fantastic personalities that don't have a thumb mark! |

Sasha, I have to totally agree - a thumbmark doesn't make a bit of difference - a good horse is a good horse!!! A thumbmark just adds a bit of mystery, history and story!! A great fun topic though!?!

Know what you mean Sasha!! A thumbmark will never make a "horse", the "horse" is already made - therefore a thumbmark is an added extra - for us to decide how important the thumbmark is?? Does that make sense??

Well, mystery, myth I can only say that its a wonderful story. I will never forget when someone came to buy my friends horse and saw a Prophets mark on my Arab mare, on her chest, pointed it out and wanted to buy HER! Of course I refused, she was my best friend from 6 months till she died aged 25, but I often thought about the story! |

My first stallion had one and he was a right git! And he wasn't a particularly good horse either! The answer is no, it doesn't make a good horse, a horse with the mark is just a good, bad or middle of the range horse with a thumb mark! |
