Sorry but I have to vent!
I keep my horses on a small DIY livery yard, and 2 years ago, a bloke turned up with a big grey mare (Gelderlander I believe) who was the thinnest horse I have ever seen (in the flesh so to speak). Anyway this mare was in foal and miraculously she managed to give birth and raise her filly for six months. I have to be fair the guy was feeding her, and by the time he sold the mare she wasnt looking half bad.
Anyway, he kept the filly and moved her onto the common not too far away. I have been keeping an eye on her each day I drive past, she didnt winter too well and it was well into June before she lost her winter coat. Then she disapeared and suddenly turned up on our yard again Thursday. She is very thin and very quiet (my yearling who is a month older than her is like a tornado about the place!). He has his daughter coming down to look after her and she knows as much about horses as I do about quantum physics.... Apparently her father was told to 'get that thing off my land before the RSPCA come sniffing round' hence her arriving back with us. She seems to be having trouble getting her head down to eat which would explain the weight loss on such good grazing. The daughter thinks she has a bad leg.... I have tried to give advise that I suspect she has hurt her back or neck and should see a chiropractor. However this fella doesnt want to spend any money on her and wants rid and has found some bloke to take her off his hands (sounds very dealerish/gypsy to me)When I went down this morning to do my horses and she had the tell tale smell and feel of show shine, so I suspect this bloke has been to see her.
She is a lovely filly, bay with a big white face and 4 white socks over her knees, she has the sweetest temperament (considering the life she has had). I REALLY want to buy her and give her the life she deserves, but I am at my financial limit with the three I already have. I am so frustrated. There is no point reporting him to anyone as he is supplying food and water and I dont really want him moving her on and not knowing what becomes of her.
How can people see horses as money making objects and not living creatures that should be respected and loved? It makes me so angry.
I have decided while typing this in tears that I will ask Jane (the daughter) how much he is hoping to sell her for, and see if I can get a second job to pay for her keep.
Sorry to go on, but some people make me sick. I needed to rant amoungst people who will understand. Edited to say that she is called Mystique, although she is refered to as 'he' or 'him'....

Oh dear I do feel for you it's awful seeing something being wrongly treated. Maybe if you can buy her then at least she can get her problems sorted out even if you then have to sell her on. At least it will give her a better chance in life. Hope you manage to get the pennies together. |

Here are some pictures of Mystique when she was a foal. You can clearly see that state her mother was in at the time. It is a miracle she carried and gave birth to such a lovely filly. She was in much better condition by the time she was sold (unbelievably I know) I dont want Mystique to end up in the same way.

That poor mare what an awful shame. The filly looks sweet. It could be a back issue that is preventing her eating enough, or a tooth issue or even really swollen lymph glands will prevent a horse bending down to eat properly. I hope you get it all sorted, if you could take her for a while until she is healthy and then find a loving home for her but I do sympathise, its really hard to look at poor souls like that and not become emotionally involved.

I spoke to Jane Saturday evening who says this guy that is interested has agreed to buy her but hasnt handed any cash over at the time. I asked how much and she said she had no idea but would ask her father and let me know.
As soon as I know I will let you know.
Thanks for all your words of understanding and offers of help.
