I live just outside my village but the fireworks & bonfire are only two fields away so I'm not looking forward to next saturday. My mare will be ok but not sure about the yearling. I think it best to leave the top door open as she's better if she can see what's making the noise, she does tent to be a bit on the flighty side, so wish me luck.

We have a village accross the valley that has a bonfire - its close enough to see, but thankfully the noise isnt to bad usually.

Freddie doesnt like them and stresses awfully if he is out, so he will be tucked up in his stable most probably.

I really hate them and think they should be bannedWell at least from rural areasBut i am lucky where Star is as im in the middle of fieldsWe have only got 4 cottages at the stables and the yard owner lives in one and owns the rest and if any of the tennants did have fireworks they would be thrown off as it is written in their contract
Good luck hope everything goes ok with you.

Try giving them some rescue remedy either in their water or behind their ears. I would stay with them until it's all over, put on some music and take lots of apples and carrots I wish they would only allow displays and not sell to the public

No worries Purdeysue, its easily done. lol!

I may try the rescue remedy this year - didnt think about putting it in his water and never heard "behind the ears" so will give both a go I think - after I have had my 4 drops of course.

I hate them with a passion too. In these days of Health and Safety hysteria, how it can still be legal to sell the average person explosives is beyond me!!.

This year, as well as the oldies, I have two yearlings and a 5 month foal to worry about.

We had our first burst of fireworks on Thursday night which I was dreading but I followed some advice on here. All youngsters in, lights left on, radio flat out!, and watched them from outside the barn to see if they were disturbed. It worked really well and I think the radio had been soooo loud they were relieved when I turned it, and the lights off, and said "good-night"!

Gives me hope that next weekend may not be as completely awful as usual.

Take your horses for a good ride in the day if you can as this will help as they will have no excess energy

Last year I had to shut the top door on Minuette as it calmed her down. The other 3 coped with it well.
This year, Minuette would have been with me for just over a year and, hopefully, will not need the top door closed.

Luckily I have mine at home, so I will be with them all evening on the 2nd Nov as there is a public display at the local Hockey club about 1/3rd of a mile up the road. We have very few neighbours to worry about on other nights.

The neighbouring Farmer was shooting last night, just as I had brought the horses in. I got Minuette out of the stable and played some of the Parelli games with her to distract her and desensitise her. She was so good, bless her. She jumped at every shot but still carried on with the games.

That's the problem Lisa, it's not only one night is it? As someone said, it's the 'season' that stretches over two weekends and all the days surrounding Nov 5.

Grumpy old women all of us, but since having the horses here on our land at the edge of the village I would happily never witness a loud, firework again, even though as a child I found them magical. But they were very much 'back garden' fireworks in those days - roman candles, bengal matches, squibs, catherine wheels, possibly a rather sad rocket to end with. But none of these multi-exploding, firecracking, mega-cannon atrocities.
Surely we should be banning them on environmental grounds? Don't they add to global warming or something???

When is bonfire night..... 5th Nov. Well last Thursday we had fireworks going off all over the place, then again over this weekend. Its not just the horses i feel for but all the wildlife and domestic cats and dogs. We are told to keep cats and dogs in on the 5th, well it seems to me that we should keep them in for three weeks!! I have had my rant, i feel a little better.

Unfortunately the fireworks tend to start in mid october and go on until january, im for the ban, last year one of the horses in the next field to us had a rocket deliberatly fired through his leg, he has survived just but what a traumatic thing for a horse to have to go through, and the thugs got away with it.

We lost a couple of guinea pigs who were in the garage out of the way, the shock of the big bangs killed them.

I hate halloween and i hate bonfire night and fireworks. shall we start a petition.
