LOL Nutter - you really don't need another horse hun, although he sounds adorable!!!! And I know exactly what you mean about Fells - they are very, very endearing (says she, who had a lovely wander around the Scottish hills on a Fell Stallion, and definitely one of the best and safest experiences I have EVER had - he was lush!!!).
But, back to the point: Pixie, I feel you really need to meet the right horse, and you need to feel it in your heart and head that this is the right horse for you. You will know when you meet each other.
Keep searching, it will happen.
Carla, xx.

Pixie I think your wish list is pretty reasonable - you just want a normal, sound and reasonably well behaved horse with no major hang ups - youre just gonna have to keep looking!! |

I honestly agree the right horse is out there and will find you, one of my liveries looked for a year and finally gave up in dispair, only to have a phone call about a week later from a local producer who had a lovely mare for sale - and she was PERFECT!
If you haven't found the right one yet , it's for a reason, so keep on plugging and get your advert on here! be as specific as you want and I'm sure someone will appreciate your honesty and requirements and the right horse will come along.

Well you did ask Moosie - its a long post.
The story when I rang.....
15.1hh 10yo bay gelding viewing at livery yard. As a 6 year old one of the lady's liveries sold him for financial reasons. He was sold to a 70+ year old woman and her middle aged daughter. The Mum was returning to riding and the daughter was learning. They had him 3 years.
Sadly the old girl has Alzheimers and the daughter didn’t know what to do. They also had a filly off of the lady to keep him company. Kept at home. Anyway the old girl keeps wandering off and then rings the daughter and says you know we’ve got a couple of horses in the back garden where did they come from. We’ll have to do something about it.
The daughter was scared for the mum i.e., wandering off and scared she would either forget to do the ponies or leave the gates open etc etc. recipe for disaster really. Anyway the daughter rang the livery lady and asked would she help sell him and have the filly back. So basically he is on sales prep livery. He is non spooky, push button ride, not lazy – forward going but not really fast or fizzy. Nice person to be around. No vices. No allergies. Will live in or out. On the light side of medium weight. Nice rhythmical balanced paces. Did pleasure rides and the occasional sponsored ride. Has been to the odd show and has always behaved. Doesn’t buck, rear or nap. Will jump round a course of 3ft3.
When the mum and daughter bought him they had a 5 stage vetting done. They were told he wouldn’t pass for 3 day eventing but would pass for what they wanted and also the odd show jumping round. He has had a previous injury to his cannon bone. Just cosmetic.
As he was arriving on Friday I asked did they need to let him settle before I come down on Saturday. Lady said no not at all as he is very calm and unfazed and completely uncomplicated. Not needed to be ridden everyday. He just arrives and settles.
I did say to her are you a dealer and she laughed and said no I own a livery yard but take horses on sales preparation livery.
You couldn’t make this up……
So I get there. 2 Alsatian dogs at the gateway. One barked and then had a bit of a growl at me. So I ring her. No answer. Then the dog gets up. I don’t know how. Bag of bones. The other one gets up even worse. Thought well whats the worst they can do to me. They were both too thin and weak. Didn’t look old. Anyway whilst I’m debating I see someone coming down the track.
No its not the lady its a young girl(small child). She is probably 11 but maybe 13. About 6 inches shorter than me. And I'm short. She says the lady has got held up but has asked me to show you the horse.
She opens the gate and in I go.
Horse has a great big wobbly belly a fat back end no muscle and a skinny neck. 3 hairs for a tail. Lots of fur missing here and there. Big old scar on his front cannon bone. Which in fairness she did tell me about. Although I couldn’t remember if she had said front or hind. Long toes and very flat footed. Wave front teeth at the front but looks like he might be 10. Looks like a horse that’s been on box rest to me. New shoes on though.
Anway he is quiet enough until I pick the saddle up. Then he nearly tramples the child to death. Trying to get hold of him I nearly drop the saddle but not quite. Numnah is now in the mud. Managed to stop him being an arse. Pick up the numnah and give it a good shake next to him. No reaction. Perhaps I made him jump. Don’t know. Anyway tack him up. I say to child how often have you ridden him. She says never. Now I’m thinking if he is a naughty horse and she ends up eating the school where are her mum and dad. Nope no one around just me and a small child. I could have been anyone. Its scarey really. OK I’m thinking maybe he is not a naughty horse – he’s not supposed to be. Say to child are you sure you want to get on. She said I’ll be fine I’ve seen him ridden loads of times. Oh I say have you seen him at shows. No she said the lady sold him from here about 3 months ago but he has come back as the lady who owned him is now ill. Yeah righto! LIAR LIAR YOUR PANTS ARE ON FIRE. The child is just saying what she’s been told to say shame about the time period though eh?
Anyway at this point I have already decided that I don’t want him. But as we have tacked him up……… say to child are you sure you are ok to ride him. She says yes. Well he was ok very hollow completely unbalanced. Wobbly all over the place canter. Wrong bend. Not the way to sell a horse. Child not really a rider. But he was a good boy and seemed to have a nice temperament. Not very fit he was really puffing in trot.
Certainly not worth £2950 of my money. I’m happy to pay whatever I need to for the right horse but I’m not being robbed. I wouldn’t have given you a grand for him.
Me thinks a horse that’s been on box rest from and injury - yes probably the cannon bone. People no longer want him and lady has him to sell.
Oh and when I ask the child were they all livery horses in the field she said no they are all for sale apart from a couple of brood mares. Bloody DEALER. I don’t care just be honest about it.
I then leave the yard - if you can call it that (mud pit and a few shacks) and leave small child there all alone. No one around whatsoever. Honestly do her parents know. I could have been anyone. Its just scarey.
Well you did ask Moosie. Hey ho. |

What an amazingly elaborate story to make up though! Its got so much human drama. Do you think it was completely imaginary or she was applying someone else's story to THIS horse? How interesting! At least it wasnt lame I cant believe how blase some parents are with their horse-children. I'm almost glad mine arent interested its so fraught with calamity. |

Don't know if she had made up the whole story or not but the time frame didn't fit and she was a dealer. Well once I've caught you telling lies I never beleive another thing you may say.
I hate liars.

hi, I definatly think taking an 'expert' along when viewing a horse is a good idea, I don't believe buying a horse should be something that's jumped into, this is so the buyer can ensure it is the right horse for them (also good for the horse as to get the best home) and taking someone more knowledgable along will help to make the right decision. I also usually go away and think for a few days anyway whether I take someone or not, it's just being a bit more careful and thorough that way! I've also had the pleasure of experiencing a few timewasters aswell so I can definatly support how annoying they can be |

you made me chuckle Lin123. I might not be the best rider in the world and still have a lot to learn. Don't we all. However I can spot a lame horse at a few paces these days and a scam artist at a few more.
I am turning into THE TRUTH MACHINE. Me and Judge Judy....... lol
One of the people at my yard also looking for a horse. He is an ok rider but not very good when it comes to viewing horse flesh. He is a full livery so just a rider really. anyway went to Watford to view a horse. Comes back tells me all about it. Sounded like a nice "person" if a bit underweight.
So my friend goes with him for a second view and as his expert. OK the people selling admit they have had the horse for 2 years and not done much with it and are not really that horsey themselves - they happily admit all this. No story to tell just as is.
Poor horse has a big old kick on the knee and is lame. The saddle was pressing down on its back. my friend says couldn't even get a finger under the saddle front and back let alone the recommended 3. Tells them to go and get another saddle. They had about 5 all on pegs. None of them fit. She refused to ride it and tells the guy he is not allowed to buy it. He was very fed up. Thats just the second horse he has looked at. Oh my he has either got to get lucky or get wiser.
It makes me fed up but I'm not fed up for me - I'm fed up for the poor horses that cannot make any choices for themselve.
I really believe that she shouldn't be allowed to own animals unless you can prove you are capable.
Hay ho. |

Oh poor pixie.. as said before been there and i do feel for you.. I can remember 3 times when i was spitting feathers when searching for my daughter.. The 1st we had discussed all with the owner about said pony.. right down to the fact if she felt the child was not worthy of the pony she would not sell as she wanted the best home for pony also she was a qualified riding instrutor.. I did have respect for her as i only would sell mine if i was happy with the person and i have before now also viewed the home before selling!!so that was not a problem to me.. We drove from ours for 2 hours to a place down in Cornwall called Mousall(sp) when we got there it was the worst put together pony i have seen in the history of man.. obese but seemed to have a nice temprement.. i knew straight away we were not purshasing the pony!! Women got on !! c*** rider My daughter i got to get on as personally i believe if we have driven this damn far give her experiance of a diferent ride!! My daughter got on and it would not move !! the women went on to critasise everything my daughter was doing etc there was no way in a billion years she was a riding instructor!! after 5 mins i told daughterher to get of as women was dragging it from the front with all her strength!! and apparently my daughter was a complete novice!!! also very heavy handed and she would suggest i got a good riding instructor.. I personally was pleased with Angie who gave her lessons!! NOW that was it... correct my daughter if she is wrong and i am happy for you to do so as she will listen to somebody else more than myself BUT slate and talk codswallop when there is nothing incorrect no no no!!!! As one thing she has not is heavy hands the complete opposite.. If my daughter has such awfull heavy hands why at 11 years were other owners happy for her to exercise their race arabs and ride out Saroukh arab stallion on very very busy main rds!!! 2nd after full conversation arrived to view another got there and the sarcoids/tumours which were NOT menchioned were larger than golf balls hanging on 3 inches or more of thin stretched skin of this poor pony.. to get there we had driven through 2 hours of snow blizzerd!!(yes stupid i know!!) 3rd worst got there this time con merchant!! had gorg stunning beautifull show pony it was stunning... push button ride on the bit .walk to canter.. floated wonderfull.. BUT alarm bells ringing in my head!!! amazing my daughter who hates jumping after nasty accident when younger jumped this pony 3ft and more .. they set up the jumps and she did them.. she was in love and loved it.. WHY was it so cheap hmmmmm.. Now when i got there they had it tacked up !!(me not like!!) so i took tack of to have look.. there it was b***** stamped loss of use which you dont see that often.. So i thought i would play them at there game and ask what it was Reply (from a sml riding school!!)we dont know but becouse it looks similar to a doughnut thats ponys name!! So we left but i also had taken down freezemark in my mind and rang up farmkey they would not give me all details but told me the year said pony was stamped loss of use and where !!! local to us originally only 13 miles down the road!!! so poor bu**er was proberly buted up to the eyeballs but i knew before id seen the loss of use it was a fantastic pony and price they were asking was no where near enough.. was it stolen? no as no paper work!! how does a pony like this have no history!!! But we did after 2 years of searching get the perfect mare.. so it will happen.. Oh.. there was another... we got there and safety stirrups were on back to front i told the women and she said well thats how my daughter has always had them and her riding instructor has never said its wrong !!! Keep going as when you least expect it it will happen.. |

Blimey it's very sole destroying isn't it! I've decided that if Shida comes home okay I will look for something to loan rather than buy as she'll be out of action for a while. Wonder what the loan market is like!!! |
