Dear All
If anyone knows of a mare that could take on a 3mth foal please let me know. My friend is having to have the mother put down tomorrow (Saturday 25th August) due to a badly damaged uterus, and the foal is 13wks old. The foal is currently in Hampshire so somewhere between there and Devon would be ideal.
A message has been left with the Foal Bank and obviously the foal could go onto milk pellets, but i thought i would ask you all on my friends behalf.

many thanks

Prim

Can't help with a mare but at 3 months old the foal can be fed a stud balancer as in Buckeye Grow n Win. My foal has been eating this (pinching her mothers food)since she was around 6 weeks old.

I think you will struggle to find a mare that will accept a 3 month old foal, what you will need is a companion for the foal. I am sure that at this age the foal will be fine apart from being a bit fretful when it's mother has gone.

So sorry that your friend is going to lose her mare....:((

Hi, Very sad news about the mare We lost a mare when her foal was 6 weeks and we had to rear him on milk from a bucket, he had to be fed every two hours!! its very hard work as you need to feed them through the night and this foal is even younger. Good luck in finding a mare, i live in north wales so im much too far away!

So sorry to hear the bad news. I have a friend who lost her mare this year when the foal was a month old. He very quickly learnt to drink from a bucket - semi skimmed milk and honey. I saw him a couple of weeks ago aged 3 months and he looks fantastic. He goes out to play with a tiny pony, and sleeps on his own.

Sorry to hear of the bad news, i wouldn't have thought a mare would take on a foal aged 3 months but anything is worth a try.
Friends of mine raised a Newforest foal last year on the bucket when his mother was in a hit and run accident, the foal was 8weeks old and is a super chap now.
Hope everything works out for owners!

I agree in thinking that youll struggle to find a mare to accept him, poor baby but at least he has a little age on his side. If they have the time to put into him to rear him themselves and make sure he has a babysitter then hopefully all will be well. Best of luck and will be thinking of your poor friend tomorrow. Leighx

Hi - don't know if this any good but I have 2 welsh sect B mares aged 3 and 4 who are very soft and kind (one particularly) they couldn't 'milk feed' your baby but they are very kind and might make good companions. My number is 07711-838319 should you be interested. p.s. both have lived in a heard - are used to foals - one had a baby last year. All the best either way Rachel.
