What's it say Pat.

'Cause I didn't enter anything I won't get one. I'm just wondering what the outcome is.

Hi Nat

In brief it says that the show did not have insurance against having to cancel and has therfore incurred alot of costs and asks that we only ask for 80% of our money back - there is a form with it for us to fill in and send back giving us three options (1) to contribute the whole of the stabling entry fees (i.e. claim nothing back), (2) claim 80% back or (3) claim a percentage back that we decide.

I would of rather been given the option of a credit towards next year. At least they could of got interest on the money for a year, and I would not of lost anything.

got ours this morning as well. Why did a big show like this not have full insurance, what if something bad would have happened.

I was of the understanding that the show was canceled by Three counties show ground!! if that is so, should they have been covered that way they would pay the a.h.s, there for the a.h.s would not have lost so much, nor the members.jmo

At the guess the showground would have an indemnity clause in their Terms and Conditions. I would be surprised if they didn't.

Hi

Why should we all take the brunt of the show not being insured !!!
A show that size should of been insured.
As supporters we should not ben held responsible for someone elses lack of thinking within their job.
They should refund the full amount or honour next years entries with an option of a contribution from us supporters.
Not everyone has one or two horses entered,so for those people it does total to a large amount of money and a 20% loss becomes a huge loss.
Some or if not most people work hard and save all year to show their horses.
Lets hope some lessons have been learnt from this and insurance surly must be a priorty from now on.

Here Here Zoe!! In any other 'trade' or profession when you have paid for a service you either get it or your money back!!!
The only problem with honouring next years entries is that a lot of people have primed their horse/s for this occasion and maybe cannot or do not want to show the following year. eg. Colts commencing stallion duties, mares that are in foal for next year etc etc.

Although this matter does not affect me this year, I am an AHS member and think I am entitled to my opinion.

I think the AHS should give us the choices as follows:

1. A complete refund
2. Put the entries towards next years show [if you do not then take part in 2008 you forfit the right to a refund at that stage]
3. Kindly donate your entry monies to the AHS [this option is for those of us that can afford to do this]

I know the AHS may have incurred costs, which must be a huge blow but they should have had insurance for this senario I don't see why the members should loose out, do you?

Sorry to all at the AHS, but I think this needs to be said

I agree with Pashon's comments but the AHS can't be blamed for everything and our and our horse's safety was considered when cancelling this show. I'm still miffed we couldn't go, it's like my annual holiday, I love it

Hi Natalie

On the form, there are 3 options,
You can donate your entry to the AHS.
Request any percentage of your money back
Or the suggested amount of an 80% refund, to help cover the costs lost, Ie catalogue printing , rosettes etc etc.
I agree the society should have had insurance, Hopefully a lesson will be learnt from this ??
As I am sure like most I can't afford to lose entry fees, as if you want to compete somewhere else instead it needs to be funded.
I have ticked the 80% refund box, seemed the correct thing to do.

Can I ask is the temporary stabling at three counties taken down after each event, I know at other showgrounds it is a permanent temporary fixture on site. If it was towerlands i would ask for my whole stabling fee back as theirs never come down, but am interested to know about 3 counties.

The temporary stabling is put up specially for us & the NPS show which runs a few days later. Doing it this way we are able to share the expense of the transport, etc etc.

So - yes some of the costs of the stables have still been incured.

Does that mean you can request 100% of your money back? If that's the case I can't see there is a problem

Yes it does mean if you want you can have 100% back.

But hopefully most people will realise that some cost were unavoidable and be generous.

Incidently (i have been advised by someone in the industry), that - insurance could well have cost about 20%!!! (and we may have had to wait even longer before we had cancelled - my contact suggested they would have insisted waiting till the morning of the show)

Very interesting re: the insurance. Everyone would have been more upset had they had travelled to the show to find it cancelled.

I think that the AHS are being quite fair, like you say those that can afford to be generous will be, I'm sure.

Very few Insurance companies will cover a show for cancellation, if it comes within what they classify as "An act of God"

This is not correct - my job revolves around placing this type of insurance and I will be asking AHS if they would like to arrange coverage for the future. Weather coverage is available provided the cancellation is beyond the control of the Assured

Also as regards other trades always giving full refunds again this is not necessarily true - if for instance you book tickets for a sporting event/music concert often there will be an admin charge if the event is cancelled.

Stabling - not true about temporary stables being permanently up at Towerlands - we found this out to our horror last year when we got there on the Friday to find they were just arriving on a lorry and had to be erected and even worse we had exhibitors waiting to fill them.

Check the entry form and the schedule - there will often be something in there about what happens in the event of cancellation. If there is and the entry form was signed then you have agreed to the terms.

in the scheme of thing 80% sounds reasonable

Hi Yvonne

I'd love to know which companies you are talking about. Obviously can't be mentioned on here, but maybe you would let me know by email.

Hi Cinders the temporary stables have been standing in exactly the same place since february unless they are only putting them up for tuesday club nights (which happen every week) which would be hilarious, so i would definately call them a permanent temporary fixture.

We discussed refunds in previous threads. If your horse had been ill you wouldnt have got a refund etc etc. This was not AHS fault. Organising a show of this size requires a lot of upfront expense. Yes they could have got insurance BUT there is a huge cost and you must weigh up the balance of risk versus cost/reward. For those in the insurance industry you will be aware that this event is probably classified as a i in 20 year event or maybe a 1 in 40, so to be fair to the AHS they did weigh up the risk - i.e. would you have been happier to pay higher entry fees etc each year just in case? Also the syndicate/insurer is unlikely to have easily paid out and as previously stated, would have held off cancelling until much later. If the ground wasn't flooded and there was one road in, chances are they may not have paid out - forget the H & S aspects that isnt what the insurance is for.
I for one cannot really afford to chuck money away but my view is that I have paid and it is gone, I saved on fuel and other costs. Rather than increased fees next year I am not going to ask for a refund and hope that fees stay about the same next year. No it isnt ideal but I really dislike all this complaining that things werent done properly - this was no ones fault and the right decision was made.
Organising big events is a thankless task and you never get thanked only criticised.
I am sure many of you will disagree with my comments - sorry if you do, but iti is just MY opinion.

Azeer, Well said , I cannot understand all this huffing and chuffing about a refund , I for one will be leaving my money with the AHS, We all belong to this club , it belongs to us all , and taking money back is not in the best interest of the AHS.
Insurance costs will put the entries up sky high , do we really want that ?
As Azeer says , this is my opinion too !!!

Hi all,
I was supposed to have a stand at the show, so I had to get Liability insurance for the show as an extra cost. the company I went with also did insurance for show organisers, and they had a cancellation policy. It anoys me that I have to have insurance against their tempory stands falling down on customer, shouldn't that be down to the people who put up the stands????
I cannot belive that the show ground would allow the show to go ahead unless AHS had full insurance, I had to bring proff of mine!

Unbelievable - NOT INSURED! Who, I wonder made that decision? or even considered the consequences! Paid a high price for that lesson, haven't we?

Of course we are "insured" - just not for "cancellation" through an act of god! - this is not unusual - most county shows etc dont - it is just too expensive!

The way i see it is - you are being politely asked to consider donating 20% (or more if you see fit) of your entrys to cover the costs that were incured.

"If" we had taken cancellation insurance out, this could well have cost us all an extra 20% on our entry fee - each and every year!

So "personally" i dont think we have "paid" a high price for the lesson - I think we would have been paying a higher price "if" we had insurance. (always assuming they would have paid out in this instance - My insurance friends say not! - the ground it self was not completely under water - and they would almost have certainly have made us wait till the morning of the show)

Just "my" personal opinion!

Just another thought - if you decide to "self insure" and have got away with it for many years - surely the AHS had a contingency fund set aside, adding a little each year, just for these eventualities.

As I understand it, please enlighten me if I am wrong, the legal situation is that the AHS have to give all the money back to its exhibitors/sponsors/etc etc.

I am sure MANY members have also suffered financial loss due to the cancellation and in some cases the floods - they are not asking the AHS to re-imburse them for their loss just their entry fees etc.
