Astral came in from the field last night covered in bot eggs I have managed to get the ones off of his body, but does anyone have any tips for getting them out of his mane easily without breaking his mane off?
Every summer this happens and i end up snapping his mane off trying to get them out.
Any tips gratefully recieved

Can't think of the make, but you can buy a spray (bot egg remover) that makes them slide off easily... check in local tack store.... body ones are best removed with a bot knife, and ones on legs i tend to pick off...

Ouch, I never feel safe with the bot knife lol, much happier to use the black pumice type things. I think they still break the hairs though so probably the spray would be best. |

I use my nails on his body to get them off but they have laid them all in his mane and its a nightmare to get them off. I will have a look for the spray, what about baby oil, anyone used that? |

Liquid Paraffin is also good for smothering bot eggs, also conditions the hair making it easy to remove the eggs.

before turning out spray with mane and tail conditioner it makes life much easier when it comes to removing the bot eggs. my horse is terrified of bot flies and in the 15 yrs i've owned him i think he has only had about 6 eggs. however my friends mare used to get covered and she found using mane and tail made them slip off the mane. however you need to get them out of the mane first before spraing mane and tail everywhere. this advice probably doesn't help at the moment. |
