Hi, Just wondered ,How long should you wait after gelding for a newly gelded horse aged three to go out with other mares and geldings. I have been told BETWEEN 4 TO SIX WEEKS. Is it safe at four weeks after castration, also how long is it before coltish behaviour disapears even though the horse in question was like a gelding even before the snip, thanks.

It depends on exactly how old he is and whether he was out with other geldings and mares or was he kept on his own?

Putting a newly castrated horse out has caught many people out with surprise foals! The active ingredient that gets a mare pregnant is not taken with the bits chopped off, thats just where semen are made. they are stored and can live for about 6 weeks apparently, so I would err on the side of caution, and leave it at lease 6 weeks, he is young and should have been quite fertile.

Coltish behaviour also has something to do with how much was taken, some vets leave behind something that still produces the macho horsmone but without producing sperm. (apparently, this is what a vet castrating 2 of my friends colts said, she asked if they needed more presence or did she want them dead quiet)

sorry having senior day on biological names!

I have always been informed that it is possible for a horse to still be fertile a month after it has been gelded. So I think the six week date would be safest !! Turn him out with the geldings only, to begin with. Go slowly with the mares - see how he behaves in-hand. It would be very unfair to him if most of the mares were in season!!
