This is probably a long shot, but I have noticed we now have a large Welsh community on here, so maybe someone can help.
My mum owns an Arab x Section D. She bought her 11 years ago from Clive Howells. She was told she was 5, but anyone who knows Clive Howells will know that she could have been any age! I have no idea where she was before then, but I know she will be with us until the end of her days. I have attached a pic, as someone may recognise her. As she came from a dealer, she had no name, and Clive was reluctant to say where she came from, apart from the fact she was a part-ex rather than from a sale. You will notice she is freeze marked, but we got that done, so wont help tracing her history.
Here she is:
If anybody recognises her, I would love to know anything about her Arab parentage!

Hi, good luck in finding some history on her. I am in the same situation bought my mare from Clive last September in a mess bought outside the ring I believe as she was in such a mess but he says she was bought in the ring (I don't believe the sale would have allowed her to go in the state she was in) Anyway he told me she was a warmblood x she couldnt be ridden as she was so weak, even though he offered I thought pointless as she was so weak she wouldnt have the strength to carry someone. So I bought her as she was taking his word that she was broken and aged 6.
It has transpired she is a standardbred trotter and has been broken to a sulky so not ridden, it has taken months to get weight on her and retrain her, still I love her and would never part with her, atleast she is 6 which is what she said. It took 7 months to get a passport from him and I dont believe it is hers, it is similar but the previous owners address does not exist so Im at a dead end. I have had absolutely not joy in tracing her history and when I asked him for history he said what do you wanna know for you are better off not knowing!!! So I have given up. Unfortunatley, without a microchip or original passport it's finding a needle in a haystack, but goodluck I hope someone can help you and recongnises her, all the best. Claire |

Sorry can't help regarding your mums mare - she looks nice! Is this Clive Howells a dealer....I don't know him but I'm sure I've heard his name mentioned in relation to Llanybydder & other horse sales?
Claire - welcome to AL - where abouts do you live....I'm in Mid Wales near Builth Wells
Oh poor mare - sounds as if she was in a right state - good for you for taking her on - she is very lucky! Unfortunatly Standardbreds - if they are no good on the track usually end up in the sales & more often than not go for meat...well they used to - don't know it its changed. Also I expect shes bay? - & nearly all SBs are bay & all look very alike - tend to be plain bay with no markings. Just a thought....have you checked inside her lip to see if she has a tattoo...SBs that come in from the States have to have a tattoo. Also I think if shes raced she will have to have been microchipped....have you had her checked?
I used to own a SB & did endurance on him - I rather like the breed - sadly they are not really used for ordinary riding horses in the UK.

Yep, I put a info sought advert on welsh trotting message board. I spoke to Stagbi and the other associations in the uk and wales no joy, she has no tattoo in her lip bottom or top, not had her scanned for a micro-chip I asked the vet when she came out and she didn't have it with her so couldn't check. It has been suggested that she possibly came from Holland I know she was bought at Llanybydder sales, but that is all I know, couldn't get the lot number of her off him so Llanybydder sales couldn't help either. We will be having another vet out shortly for my mums old boy Chance, I am going to ask them to bring along a scanner to check her. Fingers crossed.
She is fab and I love her to bits much like the arab they are endurance horses and totally understated, with time and patience they can be re-trained to many equitation sports especially reknowned for dressage although, im usless at dressage so sticking to SJ and XC with her ; ) |

Judith, Thought I was in luck when I saw I had a few replies!! Not to worry - knew it was one heck of a long shot - but if you dont ask you'll never know! Yes Clive Howells is a dealer based in Rudry (just outside Cardiff) Dont want to speak bad of the man (on a public forum!!) but from personal experience I think the people at Gwantanamo Bay (sp) are treated better that the horses on Clive's yard. I could tell you lots of stories, but wont put them on here for obvious reasons.
Claire - good luck with you mare, she sounds to have had a lucky break finding you. Oh and welcome to Arab Lines. Its fab here - you will love it!

Kate....this Clive Howells sounds someone to avoid! POor horses then that end up with him Does he buy the no-hopers from the sales in the "hope" of seeing then on & making a killing.......sounds like it??!!
Claire - I know a standardbred racing man in this area who takes the no-hopers/racers to the sales - usually Beeston - but Llanybydder also..........his "failures" usualy go for meat! I could ask him..... |

I agree CH doesn't care about the horses, likes to make a quick turnover. Unfortunatley, he makes most of his money from people like you and I who feel sorry for the horses.
Judith; That would be fantastic if you could ask him. I will describe her as best I can. She is a full up 15.1/2hh aged 6 not 7 yet, confirmed by dentist, she has an extra tooth on her bottom jaw next to her front teeth causes no problems. She is bay with black legs, mane and tail, only white is a hind small sock with black spots. She is a typical standardbred, heavy head and legs, narrow body, flat long back. Extremely well mannered in and out of the stable, when I had her she didnt know what a carrot or polo was and very un-affectionate although I am winning her around slowely (signs of a racing horse) moves with a touch on her side i.e position into a sulky. Farrier, vet, dentist excellent and falls asleep, walks straight onto a lorry first time no problems and travels fantastic.
She has broken knees, has previously fallen on her front knees more than likely in a sulky, no swelling or lameness, her legs are completley clean apart from her knees, they have small bald patches on and the hair will never grow back but doesnt effect her apart from occasionaly scuffing them in the stable and they bleed easily, she is now on rubber matting and I have had no problems since. I believe that is what ended her racing days. I also believe that she has bred a foal, as her teats are quite low and she is very stand for anything when she is in season.
Perhaps a piccie may help?

Just to say and update;
Vet found a microchip day before yesterday oddly on her right hand side near her poll? Anyway, took the number lots and lots of phone calls, turns out she is Dutch and called Neverkissadutchman (yes one word). Her d.o.b 02/06/2000 she has an outstanding bloodline and is prodominantly of US standardbred breeding a few dutch standardbreds and french trotter less than 3%. She raced from the age of 2 1/2 for 2 years, uncertain as to why she stopped she wasn't really slow id say average and had won and come 2nd a few times. Possibly down to her broken knees??? |

Just looked at the online catalogue for Llanybydder on Thursday - someones entered a 20 year old Standardbred mare....because they can't afford to keep her.....how sad at that age she will end up with the meat man I'm sure!
Also 6 Haflingers entered! |
