Now that my horses are out 24/7 I have noticed something strange. I dare say I am a paranoid mother, but feel the need to share.
On a couple of occassions, I have gone into the field to check on them, and Delilah, my yearling, has been having a kip in the sun. As soon as she sees me she gets up to come and see me, but the way she gets up is very strange. Now when you watch a horse get up, they unfold their front legs and heave themselves up front first. Delilah however does it all backwards, ie she clambers onto her knees, then sticks her bum up in the air and propells herself forward, taking a few steps on her knees before she is up on all four feet. She is completely healthy and sound (touch wood!)
Has anybody else seen their horses getting up like this, or does this just confirm that I am the proud owner of an oddball?!!

Hi,
I am no expert but I have seen youngsters do this before. Perhaps it is a "youth" thing..... Has she always done it this way?

I dont know if this is the way she has always done it. Over the winter she is stabled at night so does her lying down overnight, so had never seen her lying down until now.

I've never seen that happen-you got any cows close by? maybe she's been learning some tricks to impress you with!
Or maybe coz you woke her-she was a bit groggy, and forgot what goes where(happens to me all the time) |

Hi Nikki
No there are no cows about!! Yes on both occassions I have seen her do it she has been fast asleep!
I am well. I have bought another horse..... 5 year old mare - she is stunning. I fell in love with her as a yearling and have finally persuaded her breeder to part with her (after much nagging!)
I am going to Janes open day so will show you pics (unless you fancy a visit to meet her in 'person'!!)
Hope all is well with you.

Kate you naughty girl! You bought a new horse, and this is the first i've heard of her!
Tell me more, ooh yes please much rather meet her in person. Whats her breeding-is she the stunning grey in your sigs?
Try e-mailing me on your home e-mail, as you know the works is blocked for some odd reason.
I would imagine your flashy Deliah is just a little forgetful when she wakes up from a kip!Bless her. I wouldn't worry
Tell me all about your new mare |

Nikki, Yes she is the stunning grey in my signature! I will email details when I get home tonight... Iam busy this weekend, but have Monday and Tuesday off work, if you can persuade your boss to let you have a few hours off...... Hee Hee
Delilah has grown into a lovely young lady - as you may remember she was nicknamed the Red Dragon when she first arrived, but she has really turned into a complete darling. Her favourite pastime is nibbling the collars of my jacket and breathing into my ears, she also loves undoing velcro!

we had a russian draft horse that got up this way!!we did forget however, when she went down one day and the vet was trying to help her so stretched her front legs out and we all wondered why she couldnt get up this way!!sadly she was very poorly and didnt make it i think its probably just a quirk.my OH horse likes to lie down after hes finished his tea with his head in the buckethe only does this in the stable but i didnt half panic the first time he did it!! |

Nikki it would be great if you can spare an hour on Tuesday. In the meantime I will try to take some pics of new mare and post them on here!
I am not too worried about Delilah, I just got thinking that if she gets up the same way in the stable she would go headlong into the wall!! But never seen any bashes or cuts on her head so I guess she gets up with more grace in the stable!
Wheelie - sorry to hear about your russian mare. Its fun to read about these horses little quirks & foibles!

one my my friends youngsters a few years back did this and after the backman, vet, farrier out we found out it was because it was growing and had growing pains in his hind legs and found it painful to push up from the back legs.
the vet said it common for foals/yearling to go like this sometimes, or even not be willing to lie down, it can last a day or last a week or so...
but dazzer grew out of this "habbit" |

wheelie, my sec A does that with her bucket, but she actually rolls. When I first saw her do it, I thought she was ill. If I feed everyone in the field, she rolls with her head in her bucket, then goes round everyone elses and rolls in their empty buckets too. |

Does anyones Arab do this. My mare rolls, but only gets up to sitting position( like a dog), then kind of squats and scratches her belly on the ground, especially when she's losing her coat. |

Well I went up this morning to check on my girlies, and Delilah was fast asleep. Went over after checking fences etc, and she was still down but was awake. We had a little chat and a cuddle (as you do!) and after a while she got up, and she did so in a normal fashion!!!

in reply to the post at the top. my friend has an 11 year old warmblood. posh dressage horse who competes at a high level and wins affiliated comps. he always lies down and gets up the wrong way. it looks very odd. but he is fine and moves like a dream when worked. hey ho. |
