My grey mare has developed balding patches on her flank and stifle. There are also little black specks in her coat. I cant see anything that looks alive but have no idea what it is. Any ideas please?

Don't want to scare you, but we have found a few cases of lice in Herts this year and it's the first time I have seen them for 25 years (Ticks have been more than common recently as well).

Alternatively, the weather has turned pretty hot very quickly, so it could be just that she is feeling rather warm in her "out of season" coat.

Oh heck! How do you know if its lice? Does it need to be diagnosed by a vet?

Hi there

My filly contracted lice (we think) earlier in the year and we think it was from poultry. My vet (who didn't come out) recommended a product called Switch, you rub it into mane, rump, tail etc and it then disperses itself through the skin to all areas. It eradicates all lice, including sucking. Vet said if this doesn't work it isn't lice but a skin problem, and he would need to visit. Thankfully it cleared up.
