As ther have been loads of topics re breeding and how cheap horses are at the min i thought this may be a good thread

How many people breed to keep or will be selling foals before even cover mares and at what cost?, also ai or natural coverings

This yr ive covered two mares who are both partbred, mare one is on livery at 40.00 a week out day and in pm on 2 feeds a day with adlib hay, she has gone to partbred stallion and has just been scanned in foal on first covering, a total 500.00 in livery and scan but stud fee to go on top

mare 2 a partbred gone to purebred via ai, she has not yet been scanned, had a week at vet, ai and scans ect toal of 650.00, on top of this collection fee and post and yet to scan to see if she has taken keeping all xd, xdxdxd with this covering fee on top

This season i hope out of the ai mare to get a stunning show hack type, the other will breed a stunning show pony

I know there is no way on earth by time i get theese foals on the ground they could ever be priced at what i would have spent but i want a homebred showhack type pba to keep

So what makes you breed rather than buy, are you covering ai/natural and at what price, will resulting foal be for sale

Ive used two lovely stallions one ai one natural and bargain stud fees but it isnt the stud fee that brings the cost as we all know, i love the foals and get great satisfaction bringing on homebred and do it as its what i love to do

So why do we all breed and what are we all doing with resulting stock as in sale ride, show ect

It's a really difficult one to decide which to go for.

At least if you buy a horse rather than breeding it you know what you are getting.

Breeding comes with no guarantees but it's very exciting.

intresting, some good questions cassy.

the reason i wanted to breed a foal, was, i wanted a tall arab that i could ride competively, as at that time i couldn't afford to buy one ready made, and although more expensive to breed than buy, the costs are over a period of time, and i'd always wanted to breed my own foal.

I've got exactly what i wanted in Squiffy(though i still have to wait until i can PROVE her under saddle)

Then the bug hit, bloodlines, what happens when x+y=?

I breed for me, i can keep my foals, watch them develope, hopefully into exactly what i want.
Training them-i really love that, and take great pride if my farrier says how good they are, little things.

And i can not wait until, i can start riding my homebred horses!

So i am breeding horses for me to ride, and should any need to go, i would loan them out.

My only rule is not to keep colts/geldings. As my herd are mares based. and i already have geldings, any more would start upsetting each other.

I would never breed with the intention of selling, as i just don't think i could ever sell a foal that i bred. That i planned for.

Breeding is like a drug-it's so addictive.
