just wondering how you put a monetary value on a horse as my mum was asking me how much mine is worth now?
im sure he'd be worth more than when i bought him as ive brought him on and he's doing so well in jumping and flatwork.

I would think, you would need to go with the current market. Unfortunately, for some silly reason, ridden arabs go quite cheap.

My parents asked me once, i said a million pounds and not even then would i sell them.

Nikki I agree - I couldn't believe some of the low prices for quite lovely ridden Arabs on here recently! Celebrity Psyche was only £2000, for heaven's sake!

I've always been told that 'a horse is worth what someone is willing to pay for it' - so I suppose the only true way to put a value on a horse is to advertise it for sale and see how much you get! But obviously that is not possible if you have no intention of selling.

I think there are people who do 'valuations' for insurance purposes (Liz Salmon)?

The only other way is to look at ads for horses similar to yours, and see what kind of prices they are going for.

Kate, £2000 for that lovely gelding, i quite often seen nice arab geldings and mares going for £1000-£1500 by me.

I got my fantastic first arab gelding called Swift Silver as a 7yr old, with tack and rugs for £1200. He's great. Impeccable manners, lovely to ride, sweet natured lad.

I know somebody who tried to sell her young cob gelding based on what she had spent on it....feed, worming, farrier etc.

That makes my arthritic old Jameel worth a fortune!

Nikki - first place I would look for another Arab would be the ads in the Yellow Free Ads paper which covers from us here in mid Wales down to South Wales - I bought Jet (Alpha Ibn Estansa) from it for silly money & hes wonderful - also found Ginger through it. Have also found a couple of horses for friends for endurance through it - BRILL Arabs for silly money!! Seems like there are a lot of often very well bred Arabs for sale in South Wales for "silly" money! think a lot to do with the low prices is that buyers won't cross the border into Wales!!

God knows why people won't go "over the bridge" to Wales, looks to me like the Welsh are doing a pretty good job with breeding and conditioning Arabs, and if they can get a bargain too!!! What is the matter with people???

PS: I live in sunny Hertfordshire.

Hi........I just wanted to say.....as the previous owner of Celebrity Psyche, I had reasons to sell him for that price.
When I bought him I had no intention of ever selling him, therefore it wasnt very important to me how much I got for him, it was much more important that he went to the right home, now as I work in sales, I thought it would be a much better idea to put him up for a price I knew I would have many calls for...which I did.
Putting him up for a price to sell meant I had a much wider buying market.
I also kept the money I got for him, in case it didnt work out with his new mum (for whatever reason) so I could go and bring him home...
He has gone to a fantastic home, really close to where I live and I can see him at any time...
I agonised with having to let him go in the first place, but had no choice, I couldn't afford two horses and a mortgage after my divorce, I also go away on business alot, so I wasnt putting in enough time for him....
I had such a lovely email of his new mum a couple of weeks ago, telling all about there new adventures together as they get to know each other, so I wish them the best of luck...
My mare has finally stopped sulking since he left and made new friends in the field too...

ps I only paid £2000 for my mare in 2004, and she has turned out to be a lovely ridden horse, although she sometimes a pain in butt, I love her to bits...and I wouldnt change her for a minute........

Oh Emma please don't think I was being critical! I'm sure you did the right thing - to attract as many potential buyers as possible, so you could choose the best home for your boy. Celeb has certainly gone to a good and very loving home, where he will be cherished.

I was just amazed that such a super ridden Arab could be bought for such a small sum - please take this as a compliment!

I think the value put on a horse depends on a number of things.

I personally have never paid more than £600 for any horse I have bought. Most of them £400 or less.

I have been offered a six figure sum for my gelding BUT would never sell him.

A friend of mine bought an Arab x mare that is an advanced endurance horse and payed £10,000 for her, unless she is going to produce a world class horse is she worth it.

Another friend only insures hers for vets fees etc and is not interested in the value, she says that you can not replace that animal and if you love it then that is their value.

It is definately a buyers market at the moment but hasn't it always been. I bought my first Arab race horse for £1400 back in 1998 I thought it was a bargain and it was she and I won just a year later and she is so beautifully bred from the incredible Nawarra / Sky Crusader damline, she is sadly deceased and her 4 yr old daughter is priceless. I had Jumah on her for £3k and had lots of interest which surprised me as I thought at 12 she was a bit old but she's so good and quiet to ride and bomb proof in traffic, I have now sold her to a good friend as a hack so I can keep tabs on her.
Kumara is cheaper but only because at 14.2 she is considered too small for endurance which is bizarre, at 6 yrs old with great endurance pedigree on both sides and broken and in full work I think she's a bargain at £2k. I keep getting calls saying "she sounds great but are you sure she's not 15 hands" and people wo have seen give her the green light but say "if only she was 2 inches bigger". Bless her I feel she is victim of higehtism, if she was 15 hands I would have priced her at £3k in the current market!

But at the end of the day as the saying goes "a horse is only worth what someone will pay for it",and I have never paid a fortune for any of mine they were all bargains I think!!!

My best bargain.

Kazcade by Derbist out of Kazamah(Indian Silver x Kazra), Kazamah being the grand dam of one great that springs to mind Zircon Nazeer!

Ex race mare, a winner too! Bought her at the age of 9yrs, for a bargain price of £750!!!!
