We finally got our hens on saturday after about 10 years of saying one day we would like them.

This is Mark and Rosie keeping a watchful eye on them

And our first egg laid within 20 minutes of the hens going into the run

yes crinks the eggs are wonderful 6 up untill checking this morning.

Hi Judith we got 2 Maran hen in full lay (speckle & spot) as mark liked the look of them, 2 maran pol pullets (penny & tuppence) and 2 welsummer x pullets,(goldie & blackie)

and yes I have no problem finding rosie at the moment she has even resisted the urge to case rabbits out the back . Just a bit worried though as I would like to let the hens have the run of the paddocks and I am not sure how long to keep them in before letting them out if that makes sense and how to stop Rosie chasing them

When we have new POLs we put up our leccy poulty netting surrounding their house giving them access to the area outside their new home - usually leave it up for a week - they then know where home is!

Over the years our dogs have become hen proof & don't bother them - but they would have to be brave to try - our Black Rocks can stand up for themselves! Oddly enough our dogs will chase other large wild birds - pheasants, crows etc! William one of our yellow Lab boys is always carrying - never without some object in his mouth (even live mice!) but he's never tried it with as hen
