What percentage of frozen semen motility do you think is acceptable when importing semen from abroad or even in the uk? I am asking as I have just been told that a foreign stallion I wish to use has 30% motility when frozen.
Those of you that have used frozen semen before, is this percentage acceptable to you? Do you ever inquire on the motility percentage?
Any ideas or opinions would be gratefully received.
Thanks a lot.

Hi
We did some work last year with AI and i was told about 40% was good for frozen semen. We AI'd a mare in 2004 with fresh semen with 70% motility and 60% progressive motility. After we inseminated her the vet went off and checked the semen quality to see how well it had traveled ect, he left some semen on the slide and in the morning the semen was still moving!! The mare took first time.
When the semen is shipped to you it should come with a semen assesment sheet to let you know the quality of the semen which your vet will be interested but i know of a mare that took after a few attempts with frozen semen of around 17% i think its all to do with conditions and an experinced inseminator.
Good luck |

Hi there,
I have used frozen semen a number of times and would reccomend using a stallion that has at least 35% motility. |

Hi Jane,
I used frozen semen from Dawwas a couple of years ago on my mare Aliesha, I can't remember what the motility was but it was good and viable about 30% I think and she took first time amazingly (hope she does this time round with Remington Steele!). Her filly Kissira is just stunning as well (well I would say that wouldn't I!

Thank you for your replies. I felt that 30% motility was too low but it seems not. |

Hi Jane,
If the semen is 30% when thawed I think that that's the lowest you could risk. As long as it's 30% when insemited you do stand a good chance of getting her in foal.
i have been trying for two years with chilled semen from a stallion who has 30% when it's sent out! Of course by the time it gets to me 24 hours later, it's all dead - hence no foal!
I have also had chilled collected and 60% when sent and 24hours later has 30-40% motility, my mare got in foal, so I would say give it a go!

I just had my mare Krystinah inseminated with frozen seemen from the US.
My vet told me that she seemen should be atleast 25%, and ofcause higher is alot better and gives better chances, but 25% was really the absolut lowest he would "accept" - the seemen we have used is between 40-60%.
