Well been to the bookies and the family have backed 9 different horses so between us something should come in! Stomach is churning as it always does on National Day - hope they all come back safely - that's the priority!

I remember Seagram's day well - all the more exciting since we "knew" his jockey's connections!

Totally agree Marilyn - coming home safely is THE most important thing, and always the thought uppermost in everybody's mind at the National, both onlookers and connections. People must always remember that these trainers/jockeys think the world of these horses and they have the most marvellous lives with 5* treatment always ...more than can be said for some others.
Hope you win!!!

Annie I can't imagine how totally proud you must have been, but how tense watching your stepson riding round that vast course on such a small horse! My Arab's that size!!
And Marilyn, I bet you were cross with Pete for not getting a picture of you. I'd have love to see that!
As kids my sister and I used to dream about 'saving the day' by stepping in and riding some famous or wonderful horse for an owner in an emergency. I guess we never really grow up!
I used to exercise a hunter (TB) that had done the Foxhunter at Aintree and that was a smallish 16hh. Fabulous, well schooled horse but they didn't like it at the yard; said it was wimpish, but I thought it was fantastic!

I wasnt going to bet and even went out shopping deciding NOT to bet , but when I got home I thought well why not one little bet as I have done it every year since about 1976, so I quietly made a phone call (didnt tell OH) and guess what! Just WON £856 !

What was that one LITTLE bet then????????? Sounds a MAJOR one to me to win that amount!!!!!!
We only had Slim Pickings in our little group. Got Monkerhostin at 25-1 and he was backed right down so I was feeling smug (briefly - he proved to be one who hated it and refused quite early on). Sadly just heard the screens are up and commentators not sure what's going on ....
Graphic Approach apparently down on the run-in - fingers crossed but doesn't look good for him... he was running loose and suffering from heat exhaustion - like midsummer here in N/W today. The runner-up Mckelvey has broken down badly and is off to Leahurst.

I put 25 pounds to win but I didnt watch the whole of the race I only saw the last five minutes of it, just as well I think I would have had a heart attack I am a hypocrite as I hate watching the horses fall and always say I wont watch it anymore, but I still do now I need to go and have a lay down in a darkened room to recover

The 5 o'clock race has been delayed for 45 minutes due to Graphic Approach - just heard he has got to his feet ... no still being treated and last race abandoned ...

Graphic Approach was treated for heat stress but he is now fine and on his way back to his home yard.................. all horses came in safe, jockeys are a different matter................ think one was taken to hospital with a broken collar bone!

Didn't have a bet neither did daughter, but I plucked up the courage this year to watch the race............... after 8 years of totally refusing to go anywhere near a tv set whilst it was on I thought 'why not' so I did and was totally in awe of everyone in that race, hurtling over those fences at that speed takes an awful lot of skill, courage and belief in your horse and yourself.........

The most I have ever lost on a horse................. was a while ago, when Mr Mulligan won the Gold Cup, I had a an accumulator bet rolling all week at Cheltenham, put the whole lot on one horse and ended up losing the best part of £10,000 in winnings!!!!!!! At least I didn't physically go down to the bookies and put the money on the horse! And what I never had I didn't miss!

When I was small the whole family used to gather to watch the National on TV - I remember seeing Red Rum win the first time (I was most put out, I had chosen Crisp as 'my' horse) but I haven't seen it for aeons as we don't have TV.

As for famous rides: I once hacked out on a brother of Arkle (well, allright, there must be loads of them out there but I'll bet he was the only hogged thoroughbred in England!) and I've had a lesson on Lucinda Green's Hovis (one of the Welton horses) and ridden Welton Houdini (who won Badminton in 1993).

My friends horse is a distant relation to Red Rum...and I've ridden him! (does that count?) OH's brother won £500 on the national...jammy sod! People always assume because I have a horse I'd be fair game for picking a winner..they have NO idea (neither do I for that matter!)
