A friend of mine is away for the Easter weekend in Devon she is staying with another friend who is a housekeeper in a large country house. This morning they found a baby squirrel in the grounds which was apparently alone and seemed distressed, they watched it for half the morning, but when the mother didn't appear they picked it up and took it indoors. I must point out that I don't really approve of people picking up apparently abandoned animals from the wild, but it's done now so what I would like to know is what they should be feeding it etc. It has eaten some nuts, but surely that's not all baby squirrels need? They've tried phoning local animal rescue centres, but they seem to be closed for the Easter break. Hopefully someone on AL will have some advice

Difficult to advise properly without knowing how old it is---if it isn't properly weaned it could do with some lactol in a bottle. If it is eating nuts though, sounds like it is older. Try it with baby food--the powdered stuff that you mix with water---but don't get any with milk products or meat---one of the fruity, rice or oats breakfasts will do. Apart from that a variety of shelled nuts and seeds---if you can get hold of some parrot mixture that has nice big sunflower seeds in it. Baby squirrels I have reared have loved baby rusks, bread sticks and corn on the cob---all in moderation. But you can try small pieces of apple, grapes etc. |

Surely the RSPCA will have an officer on duty? I'm not a big fan of the RSPCA but they should have a wildlife officer who should be able to offer help. If not, try a local zoo?
Good luck

SQUIRRELS Most squirrel sites are concerned with how to get rid of them. These listed ones are more friendly. * Friends of the anglesey red squirrels: Llangefni, Anglesey: http://www.redsquirrels.info: Red squirrel conservation on the island of anglesey. Reintroduction and release of captive and rehabilitated red squirrels. * Meon Valley Squirrel Rescue: Hampshire: http://www.squirrels.info Building up a network to find homes for squirrels in distress all over the UK.Web site also includes a little about squirrels in the United Kingdom. This site is devoted to the exchange of information, so would like to hear from anyone with relevent experiences to share. * Squirrels www.gondar.co.uk/computer/squirrel.html * London Wildlife Squirrels www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/london/squirrel/squirrel.html

If it's a grey squirrel the RSPCA or a zoo would probably kill it because they are regarded as a non native pest species. Technically it is illegal to re-release them back into the wild---hence they would say it had no future. |

Thanks for the help guys, specially Zan for the feeding tips I'm glad they haven't managed to contact the RSPCA (hadn't thought about that Zan)! I think it must be quite young apparently it threw up after eating the nuts (didn't know they could). I do hope it'll be ok overnight, my friend may bring it home with her if she does I'll persuade her to contact Meon Valley squirrel rescue as they're quite near us maybe they'll take it in. |
