At long last I've had a phone call from my saddler to say my new saddle (an ASC endruance saddle) is in and that he'll be around to fit it next week. I'm dreading it. After everyones elses disasters with new saddles, i'm wishing I'd never ordered it. Only ordered it in the first place as Osteo says my own saddle doesn't fit proper, which the saddler agrees with and that that is the cause of the MINOR back problems Mia has been having. I'm tempted to keep the old saddle instead of part exchangeing it, just incase the new one doesn't work. The saddler has already spent alot of time trying to make sure we order the right one, but I'm really worried.
Please wish me well.

Whats an ASC endurance saddle? Is it a GP with extra dee-rings? Good luck with your saddle fitting - don't let the saddler fob you off! You need to ride on the saddle (as long as poss!) while the saddler is there - to check balance etc.

New saddle came today, feels really nice. Rode for about 10 mins in field(could have done more, but horse doesn't go well in field anyway) while the saddler was there, then went out for a hack while he had a sleep, then he checked it again when I came back. Then went back out for another 1 1/2 hours. Does seem to be ok. John (saddler) is coming back out in about 6 weeks to check it. Says its flocked with lambs wool which is very soft, so very important to get it checked, says he can do any twicking that it needs then, but nothing needs doing at the moment. He did have to open the sturrip bars a bit. Judith, not really sure what the gp looks like, but the endurance does have lots of d rings. Its a lovely saddle, leather nice and supple, lovely soft knee rolls which you can really wrap your leg around when doing a standing cantor. Only down side is the £1050 price tag. He did give me a 5% discount as didn't part exchange, as my friend wanted my old saddle. That makes sense really as its been set up for an arab and she only has arabs, so will come in useful. It's so difficult to get good 2nd hand saddles to fit arabs. Will let you all know how we get on over the next few weeks. |

Hi Cherie
Sounds a nice saddle! What I meant by GP with extra Dees - is that lots of saddle companies stick the label "Endurance" on their usual GP saddles because they just add extra Dees so us endurance folk have somewhere to attach our stuff! LOL
Important thing is that the saddler comes out to see the saddle on the horse & also ridden on.....& adjust the fit & then you ride again to see if its OK.
NEVER, EVER just take the saddle to a saddler to have it re-flocked! The saddler (if hes worth his salt) should come to the horse!!

John said he'd come back out, as he does need to see the saddle on the horse, that makes sense and I'd have queried it otherwise. I've been using John for nearly 30yrs and trust his judgement. |

The saddler needs to see the saddle on the horse & being ridden when adjusting the fit. Well in an ideal world that's what should happen!

I absolutely agree.
Most saddlers will reflock mobile nowadays. One localish saddler in my area even has a small arena at the back of the shop so you can take your horse there to get it done!

Pleased you agree Vera! Our saddler put in a menage (never can spell that word!) so you take you horse there to be fitted etc.
