Today arrived , I had been waiting 6 months for this appointment ...at the Pain Management Clinic, Taunton as I have a spinal problem ( wont bore you with details, but was hoping to get some different pain drugs/ implant/anything today) BUT I get a phone call from Frenchey Hospital, Bristol ,saying they have had a cancellation for Surgery and they want me in there NOW.(this is a surgery that is going to remove a Lump connected with the lymph system under my arm - not nasty-no cancer-but needs to come out as is very painfull) it would be a GA ,not local so , out the next day all being well. So !! Mad dash- OH comes home from work-kids go nextdoor to grandma- Friend arranged to do horses and dogs/puppies. I pack a bag for ON stay, no breakfast, and I call the other Hospital -explain-apologise-rebook appointment for pain Clinic for May, luckily I got a cancellation too, otherwise it would have been July!! AND off we go to Bristol, an hour away. Get there, book in, send OH away home as he makes me nervous, and I was called in to the consult room and waited. and waited, and then a surgical Reg comes in and ask me what I was having done today,...I explained...he looked worried...then he left. I was asked to sit in the waiting room again, and I did FOR TWO Hours. I then here the Surgeon shouting at someone, and then he sees me, and comes to talk to me. And guess what ? yes you guessed it ! they can,t do my surgery today after all !!!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!! So, I call my OH and he turns the car around to come and get me. I quickly call the hospital in Taunton, to try to get my appointment for today re-instated but alas , they tried but could not fit me it. I come home , seriously hacked off, ready to open a bottle of Gin, and wonder if this is all really happening. I Know I should feel grateful that we have an NHS, I know there are people much worse off then me, but it all so stressfull. I am working on two Medical Negligence cases at the moment so I am seeing incompetance all the time, and I think it makes me more worried about Hospitals not less. Going to watch the sunset with the horses and put today behind me. Polly

Well I guess we all have different experiences. I had the most fantastic treatment at Frenchay, it is a funny old place but all of the doctors, nurses and auxillaries I met there were absolutely brilliant and, even though I was there for major brain surgery, I only have fond memories! (the food is very good as well....) |

Hi Polly
Well that really does not surprize me. I went for my results of my MRI Scan today, seeing the specialist. He told me there isnt much wrong apart from the injury taking time to heal. Now when i first saw this P*ick he told me i dont have pain its all in the mind Now he has denied that and says its anxiety and my nervious system is shot Er hello,i had taken a very serious blow to the back and im in agony and on some days can not walk !!! Get out of the car or a chair and it takes at least two minutes to staighten up after just sitting for ten minutes !!! But he quotes all the pain i have is normal needless to say im lucky im not in a wheelchair. Then sends me away now for two weeks without looking at my back, gives me no exercises and no clues and no answers to my questions !!! Then tells me that when i see my doctor he will have the results and he will say i have this and that wrong with my back,Well Dont listen to a word he says and just ignore what he says I then asked to see my results and he replied well i dont have them here Im really worried and seeing my doctor in the morning. I really want to change who i see at the hospital as i feel he has just waffled on,for what i dont know. Does he know what he is doing and looking at or what I think you have some idea of what sort of person we are talking about here !!! |

Its not untill you have to use the NHS that you realise how bad it is,my OH and I had a motorbike crash I was knocked out,no ambulance came, the car driver who caused the accident eventually drove us to the local GP at Kyle, who phoned a taxi!! to take us to A & E in Skye, where we had to wait 2hrs for an off duty nurse to be called in to then send me home with crutches in a taxi(which cost us £80!!)

Well as several of you know and are proberly sick to the back teeth of me moaning, i had my accidant 10th of may last year, got operated 11 of feb this year which was brought forward as i told them i was suicidal as origanal op date was to be may this year, but becouse they never did proper full pre op checks, bar weigh me, i have had major life threatning after op complications and for at least a min of 12 weeks plus, daily checks of needles and medicines and with having to also fit in a 12 month reabilitation programme i can be in hospital up to 4 hours everyday, however i have to say as much as the nhs is rubbish in some aspects, its not only rubbish for us patiants its also rubbish for a majority of the staff, mind as soon as it became life threatning for me they worked and were amazing, i had my own virtial doctor from emu and nurse stay and take me everywhere for 2 days, i see the staff working so hard on a daily basis and have got to know several personlly now!!! they have all been truley amazing, kind, wonderfull, iv had many a laugh with several, especially the horse owner ones there !!!! and they really do do a wonderfull job, its the goverment and red tape that bodges it up for most involved one way or another and cut backs. theres been days when i have been wheeled around the hospital in a bed through main corridors and for a laugh i have had a bag on my head so as know one would reconise me!!! with both porters crying with laughter, one of the male nurses has made the joke when he injects me in the stomach open the door we need more space, as the bulge over the waistband of my jeans seems to be growing with limited exercise!!!!as much as the NHS frustrates us and in my case made a major mistake i have to say at the same time thank god they have been there for me.

I know the frustrations of the staff who work within the NHS, my mother is retired matron/nursing tutor and she really is glad she retired on the one hand, yet would love to get back on the wards and run them properly!
We have just had a 4 and half year battle to et my son in law the treatment he needs for mentla health issues, at last after losing my temper and threatening to take out local NHS trust to court they 'found' someone to treat him!
When daughter (madmare) was seriously ill as a child (she was about 8 when all this started) I was told the I was an 'over anxious nother and that theres nothing wrong with her she is making all this knee pain up and attention seeking'........ then we changed GPs, I went down to collect something for me and he asked why was she back in a plaster cast on her leg (again the 4th time in 9 weeks) explained what had happened the 18 months previously and he just looked at me and said 'leave it with me I'll get this sorted'. We got an appointment to take Ems (MM) to Pendlebury hospital the week before Christmas and met a lovely orthopaedic surgeon there called Mr Ross (GOD as far as Ems is concerned) he had a look at Ems knee and arranged for her to be admitted straight after NEw YEar.
She went back in and was operated on, then I found out he had taken a tumour the size of a gold ball off the back of her knee! So much for our hospital saying there was nothing wrong...................lots of treatment later, Ems got the 'all clear' the week before her 18th birthday! If it hadn't been for an GP who believed me and her, and not got an appointment for her at another hospital I seriously doubt I would have a daughter now. |

How annoying. My Mum works at the Royal Surrey Hospital in the St Lucks cancer Centre, and they asked her to do a day in the clinic, but wouldn't pay her (on easter break at the moment) but instead pay her back the time. Whilst nurses on the ward get paid to do bank work, very annoying!!! |
