Horse ride the length of UK for charity March 28, 2007
Grant and Marv. Edinburgh based Grant Nicolle is getting ready to embark on an epic 1300-mile journey. He will be riding his horse Marv from John O'Groats to Lands End in aid of the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH).
Grant will commence his adventure on April 29 and plans to sleep out most nights with Marv, his 10-year-old Clydesdale cross gelding.
"I have not yet heard of someone doing the UK length on the same horse, alone and with no support," says Grant. "I am meeting any costs involved myself as I want donations to go to the ILPH, which does wonderful work for horses around the world.
"The trip should take 12 weeks, averaging 20 miles a day, with me riding and walking where necessary. It is an adventure for us both and I will ensure Marv enjoys it as much as I will. I bought Marv in mid January specifically for the trip. He has a fantastic temperament, is great in traffic and should have both the endurance and weight carrying ability to go the full distance."
Grant, a former Captain in the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, has a long connection with the ILPH. During his time with the King's Troop, Grant brought the horses to ILPH Penny Farm in Blackpool for their summer camp. ILPH Penny, an ILPH horse was also rehomed to the King's Troop under Grant's care.
Grant has accommodation arranged for about a third of the trip and is hoping that local farmers will allow him the use of a field for the night for the remainder. He will be spending one night at ILPH Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerset.

The breeder of my older boy, Jameel did the same thing with Jameel's dad - Shawondasee. She rode from Halifax to John O'Groats to Land's end and back home again. She was raising money for the RDA.
She wrote a lovely book about it which was self published but I can't remember the name of it.
Darcey was only young at the time and it was a huge adventure - about 30 to 35 years ago I think. He was one bomb proof stallion after the event

Don't think it was available in general bookshops but was on sale locally round Northowram and Halifax. Will try to source - I always regretted not having a copy. Darcey lived to 21 and did loads of long distance and I had the priviledge of riding him and he was a real star. |
