Polly - I sadly have no idea at all.........!!!! But then again I think this could be what you are looking for...
I'm a young married man and I'm tired of life For years I've been married to a poor sickly wife She does nothin' all day but to sit there and sigh Wishin' and prayin' that she-ee could die
A friend from the village was talkin' one day I told him me wife was a-fadin' away He afterwards told me that she would get strong If I got a bottle from old Doctor John
Well I bought her one bottle to give her good cheer The way that she drank it you'd swear it was beer I got her a second, and it went the same I think she's got cod liver oil on the brain
Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear doctor John Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong I'm afraid of me life I'll go down in the soil If me wife don't stop drinkin' your cod liver oil
Well it gave her good cheer and of that there's no doubt Each week she got better and then she got stout And as she got fatter of course she got strong I think there's a devil in old Doctor John
There's bottles and bottles all over the house But as she got strong I'm as quiet as a mouse I've got to the stage if the kettle should boil I'd swear it was singing of cod liver oil
Its one of his called Cod Liver Oil |

I was brought up on Jim Reeves and still know the words to most. Bless me tho, I used to run out of the room in floods of tears when they played "old Tige" dont think I could listen to it even now without blubbering. Sandie |

Sandie just for you:
Old Tige
Tige you were faithful faithful to the end Tige now I miss you you were my best friend) Three years of Army Service done and I was headin' home at last I got to thinking bout my dog and things long gone and passed How old Tige pulled me from a creek when I had no pulse or breath How he saved me from the changin' bull that gored my Dad to death As a kid I'd dream of bears and tremble to my toes Till old Tige come up to my bed and nudge me with his nose Then my fears would melt away and Tige would go lie down I'd drift on back to sleep without another sound The big bus stopped I got off it was awful dark and thick with fog Then something gently nuzzled me and there stood Tige my dog I wondered if my faithful dog had met the bus each day And all the dreary winter nights since I'd been away Have Tige meet me here like this I was I was really glad Cause I hadn't needed Tige so much since the day they've burried Dad Too long miles still lay ahead but what I didn't know A giant Dam was being built where the old road used to go I think the Lord was sending Tige and I followed where he led Knowing well without his help that I'd be good as dead Tige inched along this way and that going rough and slow And I could hear the water a lappin' at the ledges far below Then through the mist I saw a light and mother in her chair And I reached down to pet old Tige but he wasn't there I'm thankful Mom you had old Tige these three lonely years I owe my life to him tonight I couldn't help my tears You say you wrote me bout the Dam well God was sure with us I didn't get your letter Mom but old Tige met the bus I hate to tell you son she said but now you've got to know When you left it broke his heart Tige died three years ago (You were my best friend)

I'm a sucker for Bernard Cribbens (The Hole and Right Said Fred) and Terry Scott (My Brother). I have them on my iPod, nestling with Vangelis, Tom Petty, John Barry, Andreas Bocelli and Don Henley.
I have a very catholic taste (?) in music...
Grey Girl
PS I think for scrumbatious voices you'd have to get up very early in the morning to beat Scott Walker. Yum, yum. |

I actually suprised myself, i have never fancied rod, but being quite far back in the stands his voice was orgasmic, and i dont get excited very easily, my OH with vouch for that! Meatloaf in concert second to none, i have seen Michael Jackson, Madonna, Guns and roses(going through a funny phase),elton john, george michael, boyzone(again funny phase) nothing compares to the MEAT!

Ye Gods!!!
I disappear for five minutes and come back and find you've all gone BARMY!!!
I was raised listening to Jim Reeves crooning away " Welcome to my World" and so on and Val Doonican strumming his guitar in that rocking chair....and Rolf Harris lamenting the truly sad tale of the "Two Little Boys" before he got invloved with animals......and many more too.....but maybe we'll not go there as I'm giving away my age!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But, when all said and done, no one write lyrics to touch Delaney's Donkey any more. do they....and you can take that how you want!!!
For those of you " youngsters" whose childhoods were clearly a cultural desert without Old Shep and Tige and the like and who don't know ( oh the wanton neglect of modern parents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) of the DELIGHTFUL story of Delaney's Donkey.....
I shall fill in what your parents left out and treat you to the words at least ( anyone know a site where they PLAY this??) of Delaney's Donkey....
.....some of you will relate to the emotions of those trying to "encourage" a stobborn four footed creature to move in a forward direction.....!!!
http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/folk-song-lyrics/Delaneys_Donkey.htm
There was Riley pushing it, shoving it and shussing it Hogan, Logan and everyone in town Lined up attacking it , shoving it and smaking it.......
....almost been there with Jasper !!!!!
Go take a trip down memory lane!
By the way ~ my husband, who drives me MENTAL with Jim and co would LOVE you fans of the old timers!
Me? I find Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears" album and plug my ear pieces firmly in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
maybe Val yodelled about the Mountains of Mourned once too often when I was a kid! |
