Heard today that the budget has increased 4x4 drivers car tax from £210 to £400 for a year (think i heard that it will be from oct 06) it did say that not all 4x4 will be affected and i was trying to find out if mine will go up.
apparantly it depends on how much Co2 emissions your car gives out which puts your car into a "band". on a page on taxes i found i think it is just band G which is over 225 emissions.
if anyone knows where to find this info would they be able to help? i drive an imported mitzubishi pajero SWB 2.8 diesel automatic and its a k reg.
thanks

I wish i knew... i have a 2.5 diesel discovery...and i need it as i tow trailers and have a small holding.... its not fair on farmers.. they should have done it by post code.. if you live in a rural area you should be able to have one ... if you live in the town you should pay more. I am also affected by the scrapping of the 10% tax band as i only work part time and it was good only being taxed at 10% now my tax will double... not fair on the part time employee at all!!! the tax will cost more for everyone who earns less than about 10k per year... I agree ... they are robbers... and I pay nearly £1700 in property tax... id like to know what happens to that. |

All i can say is if anybody saw the programme a couple of weeks ago, smashing the Global Warming arguments, u will understand that its all the governments robbing everybody, and yes i think both 4x4 s will be taxed quite high because i think its emissions and engine size,GRRRRRRRRRRR Typical.

Why do they always go for the 4 x 4's? I have a Mahindra Jeep 2.1 diesel engine, yet that is a far smaller engine than the big Jags that the MP's get driven around in and smaller than some of the people carriers or other big saloon cars, will they get clobbered too or is it just us 4 x 4 's owners? Heather, if it was done on postcodes then I too would get clobbered as I now live in a town(used to be rural here till the damn government started all this house building everywhere) yet I use my 4 x 4 to go out to stables with tools, I fit , flock and repair saddles etc on site.If I pay more tax I'd have to pass that onto customers, so their bills for their horses will go up.Surely this isn't fair either? I need my 4 x 4 as some stables are out in the middle of muddy fields and anything else just wouldn't get there! Oz:)

Its DAYLIGHT robbery...those buggers should be kitted with a mask and 'Swagbag' I'm all for being eco-friendly...I recycle my waste, I buy recycled. I don't use my 4x4 to go shopping to Tescos, nor do I drive to my childs school with all the other mums in my chelsea tractor to pick up my one child who could prob walk the distance or at least get the bloody bus! (I have no child btw but see my point!?) I'd also be interested to know if the Audi, Beemer, Jag, Volvo drivers of the world are going to be hit also? |

http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ you can check your tax here, mine has gone up £5 for my old shogun, and my partners new shogun has gone up £15, this is only for this year and will be taking another hike next year, press "vehicle enquiry" and put in your car details, Mandy, we'll all be back to horse and cart soon, wonder how they will deal with all the poo, |

Basically - If you have a 4x4 that was new in the last twelve months you will pay the highest "band" (i.e the propsed £400!)
Any "older" vehicles (between 2001-2006) will stay in the band they are in dependant on their co2 emissions.
Vehicles registered b4 2001 fall into either less than 1600c or over!
Michelle - no neither did "I" - but some sods did!

Me neither Michelle but as you say some silly buggers voted them in!
My OH is now going to sell his 02 disco and get a normal car, so now I won't have anything to tow a trailer with, so no shows for me, mind you, as a never married single person with no kids I won't be able to afford to now either thanks to Mr Brown!!!!!!!
I am seriously thinking about moving abroad............ |

Any vehicles registered before March 2001 1.549cc and under will go up from £110 to £115. Over 1,549cc will go up from £175 to £180
It makes no differance if it is a big 4x4 or not

heather, post codes wouldn't help. my post code would tell them i live in a built up area within one mile of doncaster town (as you know having been here lovie :) ) so i would probably have to pay full wack. but we only use our 4x4 for the horse work or when i have to fit the family in. my little nova just isn't any good for the boys, jed is nearly as tall as me (5'6") and ryan is 6'. not great having his kness in my back for a long jurney.
i think our 4x4 still falls in the lower limit, but as it doesn't seem to be listed on the sites given above (and i can't remember the reg off hand, only that it's a j plate) i can't check it out.

I think the problem is that it's a knee jerk reaction against the chelsea tractor brigade - forgetting that THOSE people will still cough up 1000s to have their status symbol, while those who actually NEED and use a 4x4 for the purpose intended wil be hammered.
And the tax thing! We're going to be a lot worse off cos we're a low income couple with no kids.
Where are all these 'average' people earning £70K?!

Well I'm not parting with my 4X4 they can P**S off! Yes I use it for my 30 mile round trip to work, which in winter can be treacherous because the council don't grit the bypass (which I pay my roadtax/council tax for do I not!?) What winds me up is when I get to work (school) are the convoys of mothers dropping off their single child in a big shiney, never seen mud, 4x4's. I could down grade to a small car, and when it snows get stuck on my way to work stranded in the middle of know where...and because our stable yard is a mile down a steep farm track, leave my car at the top and walk down in the pitch black on my own and risk being attacked by some reprobate I DON'T THINK SO! |

Honey your comments made me giggle , I agree i feel the same i have a P Reg 2.0lt freelander and i am still not sure where that falls but like you a am loathed to get rid of it. I dont do huge trips but would like to be able to to odd shows with it. I also feel that if people can prove that they have livestock/horses they should not have to pay the same as the so called chelsea mums. We have loads of them parking in our carpark as we back on to a school and they really are useless at driving them and most of them have one kid in the them (i am always having a moan at the schools at at nine in the morning and three in the afternoon we are gridlocked with woman in there 4x4)not to mentions the other idiots who could also walk the few feet to take there kids as well. Most of these people live so close but dont want to walk the five minute walk. |

We have an old N reg Disco and an even older E reg peugeot 305. The peugeot will be going this year, but only because it won't pass another MOT, but we NEED the Disco, so will keep it or a replacement whatever the cost. We live on the outskirts of Maidstone, but keep the horses around 10miles away, altough most of the journey is good A and M roads the last bit is not nice when the weather is bad. As I compete in Endurance and we have a old (about 30yrs) heavy rice beaufort trailer we need something man enough to tow it. We also have a large caravan which fully laden weighs in at 1500kgs. So Mr Blair/Brown can take a hike.
