Hi All, This is Rubys 2nd litter of kitties. The first litter born last year was 3 girls and four boys - all ginger again. ( the only man cat round here is ginger!!) Everybody round here seems to love a ginger cat so we are never short of homes and we like to keep one cos they're so cute with lovely personalities. Heres a pic of Jasper we kept from her first litter.
We try to give them orange names. We've had Rusty, Ruby, Tango and Jasper so get your thinking caps on girls I need some more orange names. Rubys babies allready have homes. In fact we have 7 homes and 5 kitties!!! Jackie. x

I got a ginger cat..called Angus, we also have his mum Naomi ( a rather beautiful tortoiseshell) and his sister Squeakie (a lovely little dusty tabby)
The last ginger cat I had was called Garfield, and he was cross eyed and pigeon toed! you had to literally sit him in his food, otherwise he'd go for the imaginary one! The amount of times we had to take him to the vets cos he had chinned himself on the windowsill....was forever falling off things. We eventually gave him to an elderly lady, who lived in the bungalows near us...then he didn't have to jump up onto anything. |

Have you put a packet of dye in the post yet Judith??? (hee heee!!!).
OK Jackie - names, hhmmm!!! (thinking cap on):
How about Jaffa (although in my youth in meant "seedless", so not good for a boy!!!). or Saffron (or is that yellow? - OK for a pale one) or Mandarin (Mandy for short) or Seville (apparently pronounced "Sayvi-yah" or Navel (type of edible orange, not the belly button!!!) or Blossom (as in "orange" blossom) or Henna (or is that too red?) or Coral
And then there's the obvious:
Marmalade Ginger Sandy Garfield
sorry, can't think of anymore at the mo.

Congrats on your kittens!
My tortie and white is due in about 2/3 weeks to a pure white to daddy. My Mum's tabby cat is also pregnant too and due to give birth any second! Will update you on any arrivals!
Has anyone noticed how expensive kittens are to buy now? I remember when they used to be free or about a fiver! Now just plain moggies sell for over £100! Madness! |

Sorry to put a damper on this. Your cats and kittens are absolutely beautiful and I know you have said that you have good homes lined up for all the kittens, but I still think it is irresponsible to let cats breed when there are so many unwanted cats in rescue centres. Yes, you have homes for your kittens to go to---it is usually easy to find homes for kittens, but every cat sitting in rescue waiting for a home was once an apparently much wanted kitten. For every home that is filled by one of your beautiful ginger kittens, that place could have been filled by a cat who has got no home. As to the fact that people now charge money for moggies kittens---this is related to what I said above. There are thousands of beautiful discarded cats in rescue centres across the country, and hundreds being pts every week, but everyone wants a kitten! And the rescue organisations have found an unwanted result of the success of their campaigns to spay/neuter, and their spay/neuter programmes for farm and feral cats which have had enormous health benefits for the cats, is that in some places and some times of year kittens are hard to come by, so people are breeding cats on purpose to cash in on this scarcity and sell kittens, with no thought to who they sell them to or what happens to them later---from my knowledge of rescuing many will land up in rescue, or un-neutered will go on to bring more unwanted cats into the world. I am not accusing you of this---just an explanation of why kittens can now cost money. So please neuter all cats, and if you want a cat go to a rescue centre. If you really must have a kitten, most rescues will still be able to oblige though you may have to go on a waiting list. If you pay a donation to a rescue for a kitten at least you know it is being spent on helping other cats, not lining someones pocket. |

Zan: nice, responsible friends of ours want a cat (or two). They went to the various rescue organisations. They all told the family to s*d off as they will only allow a cat to go to a home where there is 24/7 human presence. Nobody in our area seems to have kittens anymore so they are stuck sans puss.
I have no idea whether this is standard practice now; whether the centres took a dislike to the family; or what. But if this is typical it would explain why people go for kittens rather than a cat - and why they are so expensive!!!

Grey Girl---I have no idea of the individual circumstances of this case, but there is no way that I ( as a rescue), or any of the many rescuers that I know would refuse to rehome a cat unless there was human presence 24/7---in fact that is a laughable excuse. I am all in favour of vetting potential homes, and we all have preferences e.g. especially if the cat is to be kept indoors only homing 2 together so that they have company when the people are at work; and I personally prefer to rehome kittens in pairs; and try to make sure the environment is reasonably safe etc. etc. It is, I suppose, possible that the rescue were using this as an excuse for something else they found unsatisfactory---I prefer honesty, but diplomacy is sometimes called for. I assure you there are rescues everywhere with cats in need of homes
To find one in your area this is a good place to start http://www.catchat.org/index.html |

I Totally agree with you Zan, Felix by first boy was a rescue kitten, 4 were found dumped in the local woods, his three sisters died they were just too weak, he was neutered at 6 months, then i had two strays turn up a month between one another a boy and a girl, whiskas was a Tom in every sense of the word, had him neutered straight away, Kitty came with three surpises in her tummy, she was spayed as soon as she could be and the kittens 2 boys and girl were all done to, so i have my own little rescue operation on the go. I also donate monthly to the local cat centres as i have seen what it is like.

Oh for a perfect world, and for everyone to care for their animals as we do!!!!!
I can assure you Zan (and I know where you are coming from and admire you for it), all of Jackie's kittens have been placed in caring and "for life" homes. All of the kittens that Jackie has bred have gone to friends or family and are more than loved, they are cherished. Jackie comes from a family of life-long cat owners, so she really does know what she is doing, and wouldn't breed if she didn't have loving homes lined up for them. She also doesn't do it for financial gain, she charges a pittance for her ginger beauties (and you know how rare ginger females are??)
I have to say that Jackie refuses to let me have one of her kittens, because I have 3 collies and I prefer cats to live outside!!! She is worried that they will get lost or eaten and not get the cuddles and love that they deserve.
I agree with you Zan, that kittens and puppies should not be bred for fun, there are so many unwanted babies out there (we have rescued a few), but believe me, Jackie is a very responsible breeder, and will follow her kittens lives to the end!!!
Will get off my soapbox now, sorry!!!

Hi Zan, Thanks for your comments which I can totally see the point you are making but I must just say that I am in no way an irrisponsible cat breeder. In fact I'm not a cat breeder at all. I just have a female ginger cat and thought it would be a good experience for me and my childen to let her have a litter of kittens. I've never done this before and it's been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I made sure I had responsible homes for any of the kittens and made new owners fully aware of all aspects of properly caring for a kitten/cat including Spaying/castrating and I must say that every kitten I have homed has been spayed/castrated. I have never homed a kitten with anyone who is not either a family member or a close friend. I would also like to add that when I wanted a cat/kitten 3 years ago after losing my two cats to old age, I was eager to give two needy felines a good home but was declined by my local cat rescue centre on the grounds that my dog was not of a suitable breed to home cats/kittens with. I searched for a long time to find someone who had kittens (coincidently she is a fellow A-Liner). I really do understand the point you are making but sometimes circumstances make it impossible for people to home a cat/kitten from a rescue centre. Jackie. x |

I know Jackie --I'm sure you have done it well (though I was concerned to see this is Ruby's second litter)---I think I made it clear that I wasn't accusing you of doing it for the money!!!,but on a thread like this I feel duty bound to put the rescue argument. I still stand by my statement that for every one of your kittens who finds a home that means another who could have is left in rescue(or pts).
I'm sorry you had a bad experience trying to get a rescue cat---I get very angry when I hear of rescues with unreasonable homing policies, but they all have to walk a fine line between finding homes and landing their charges in bad situations----a thankless task and difficult for those who are not experienced. I have been rehoming rescue cats and dogs for 20 years and vet each case individually and carefully with no set rules (like unsuitable breed of dog!) But there are always other rescues to go to if your local one is being difficult, and it is still very much a sad fact that hundreds of cats are pts every week in this country. |

Hi Zan, Thanks for you comments. I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.. I'm sure you will be pleased to know that this is Rubys last litter of kittens. She will be spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned. I am a responsible pet owner which I'm sure you realise and two litters is enough for any cat. I only wish people would be so concerned with the indiscriminate breeding in the equine world. Keep up the good work. Jackie.x |

Hi Jackie
Happy to agree to disagree. I'm sure you realise I wasn't getting at you personally, but trying to put a general point about people who "let" their cats have kittens. And believe me I, and many like me, are equally concerned about the indiscriminate breeding in the equine world. Trying to change that is a bit like pushing water up hill ( but that doesn't stop me trying)
Names for ginger lady cats:
I had a lovely ginger short hair ex-feral I called Marigold, and I currently have a stunning (rescued as a dumped stray) long haired ginger called Dandelion. Here she is:

How cute is she Zan??? It makes you wonder what sort of people can dump animals as adorable as her. The black and white collie in my sig pics was dumped, someone would have paid alot of money for her as a pup, so why abuse and then dump them, it's beyond belief???

Carla I will tell Dandelion that you think she is cute---she will be dead chuffed She is gorgeous and has a wonderful temperament. Cats don't have to be ugly to be unwanted, or even cheap. As with dogs as well---I have rescued a lot of pedigrees---cost a fortune as kittens and then land up as rescues. I have a beautiful silver tabby Maine Coon and a wonderful Blue Abyssinian living here among the moggies |
