Hi All,
This is my 9 year old daughter Caity whos just been riding for 18 months.

She absolutely loves horses and would spend all day every day with them if she could. She doesn't have her own pony and has weekly lessons at our local riding school. She's come on in leaps and bounds and her confidence is really growing. Anyway today she had a lesson on a nice little coloured pony. They were indoors when the pony spooked and went into a flat out gallop before turning into a bronco!! Poor Caity clung on for 4 bucks before bailing out and ended up right under the pony who thankfully didnt tread on her just bowled her along with her feet. She was really shaken and hurt her bottom and back and cut her lip. It really frighened her and she didnt want to get back on the pony. She eventually had a little walk round on another quieter pony. She's such a tiny little thing only just weighing in at 3 and a half stone ( obviously takes after her mother!! I don't think so!!) and it was horrible seeing her being thrown around like a rag doll. Thank god she has a good hat and that I invested in a good body protector. After her normal lesson she goes to a friend of mines yard and spends the day doing horsey things and riding her ponies which she was still quite happy to do today. The picture is of her favourite pony 'Peter' who she loves to bits...

Hi Jackie, My girls are so tiny as well, but eh their dad is a jockey, even smaller than I am. They weigh about the same as your girl and are 128 and 118 centimeters long, one is 8 and a half years old the other is 7. Their younger sister is four and weighs about two stone/ 14 kilo's. And is not even a meter long, about 97 cent. We always say she has the hight of a Shetty. They do ride and sometimes fall of, they have ponies and they ride my arabs, but the arabs are much nicer to them than the ponies, and they are Dartmoors and a Shetty, but the ponies are so strong. Although they can sit on them in the field without nothing, they even stand on them!!And they never bite or kick, just do not ask them to work, haha.

She's sitting beautifully! Well, she's lucky: 18 months before a fall! I fell off on my second lesson.

Glad it hasn't put her off, poor kid; sounds like a nasty, scary sort of fall too, as opposed to a gentle slide-and-plop off. Hope she's zooming around happily again next week...

Hi All,

Thanks for all your comments. Caity had a little fall last year - well it was more of a controlled slow motion slide off and was quite happy to get straight back on. I think the reason she got so upset this time was because it frightened her so much and she hurt herself. She's back to her normal self today endlessly chirping on about horses and when she can ride again..
Sarah - Thanks for the word about her hat - Sorted.

Bless her kids are so resiliant though aren't they I don't think i'd get back on now if I fell off because i've only fallen off about 5 times in 30 years which is actually a bad thing because i really dont think i'd react well to it at all!

Aww bless her, that must have been a terrifying experience At least it didn't put her off I used to spend most of my time on the floor as a child! And as my riding instructor could be very 'insistant' we ALWAYS had to get back on. They used me as the school stunt rider, whenever any of the ponies played up it was delegated to me to get on at the end of the day, and 'sort them out!' Needless to say I usually ended up with an audience who would wait by the arena fence in gleeful anticipation of my impending doom!

Hi Jackie,

so sorry to hear your daughter had a tumble. It's well scary isn't it when you're on the side lines and can't do anything to save them. Beth, my daughter fell off her welsh x a few weeks ago, tried to cling on, ended up going underneath, got that fabulous welsh knee action straight in her face and ended up with no teeth. Well, one tooth snapped off and two went east and west. After three visits to an amazing dentist she is back to normal. The moral of the story is, aren't gumshields also a good invention, especially for children?
Hope your daughter Caity continues her riding and enjoys it as much as Beth does, falls and all!!!

Aw, hope she's ok, although it's usually us that worry more than the kids.
Oh and watch out, she'll be pinching your horse before you know it....

Poor poppet - I hope she's ok now. Evie has had a couple of falls but has thankfully bounced back. When she was tiny, she was bucked off a Shetland and it put her confidence back about 6 months. We just let her take her time but it seemed to take ages before she actually wanted to get back on and ride again. She was happy to be around horses but wasn't too keen about getting back on. When she started riding again, she seemed to have gained a better understanding and her riding came on in leaps and bounds.

I'm sure she'll be ok and I agree with the others - she looks as though she rides very nicely.

Hope all goes well xx

My daughter had a horrific fall too, she was only 4years old, on the lead rope, and pony stepped sideways as she was going thru a gate ( yard gate 6ft tall , brickwall both sides) Lydia lifted her leg up so as not to get it scraped on the gate catch, but then the pony felt the saddle catch, it was hooked on to the latch by the stirrup bar! Pony stopped, but before I could do anything she shot forwards, realized she was stuck, panicked, pulled back, reared and dropped to the ground. And in slow motion I saw my 4year old daughter fly up in the air, full sumersault, and land smack on her back, ! I had grabbed at Lydia and was left with her hair ribbon in my hand. She was very winded, but otherwise ok.( good hat and body protector ) Saddle was ripped in two !! Pony was sent back, gate latch re designed, I cried into a bottle of rioja all night for being such a stupid , irresponsible mother for allowing my precious child anywere near an equine. Vowed to sell all the horses and dogs. Needless to say we ALL got over it, she is seven now , has a beautiful position and is learning to jump, ( I watch with my hands over my eyes). Kids are far more resilient than we think. if she says she is ok and over it, she probably is. Hope she is ok ( and you too ) Polly

Hi Claire,
Thanks for your note. Thankfully Caity seems to have forgotten all about her fall ( Don't know that I have} and can't wait to get back in the saddle on saturday.
We have some more ginger kitties on the way!! end of March-ish, will post some pics when they arrive.
