I'm feeling quite gutted!! I have had Freddie for 6 years soon and not once caught him lying down. Maybe a couple of times years ago in his old paddock but never is his new one and never ever in his stable. This morning I caught another pony crashed out in her stable and its such a lovely site, most of them seem to crash out no problem but not him. I would so love to snuggle up to Freddie but at this rate it aint gonna happen - I know he does lie down from the pooh stains when he's been stabled and the flattened mud in his paddock but never for my eyes.

My previous horse would lie down frequently and you could sit up against her neck and she wouldn't move for ages. I had never seen Kuraishiya lying down and so longed to, so I left a disposable camera at the yard and asked anyone who saw her resting to take a piccie and hey presto got one eventually! Don't know if you can do the same? A few years ago I did find her lying down and I very quietly sat down next to her head and it was a lovely, lovely feeling that she trusted me to stay down. Think that's why I love that photograph of Lady Tee's filly looking up at the camera from her bed, sooooo sweet and trusting!

In the 25 years I have had Trio, I have never been able to catch her lying down! The minute she knows I'm around, she's on her feet, ready for feed. Hannah on the other hand loves her naps and I can cuddle up with her in her stable, it's lovely when they can be that relaxed in their environment. |

Ben the 2 year old section a always lets me go in the stable when he is led down! I can do my jobs around him!! He'll also let me sit with him without any bother! It's nice to see him so relaxed at such a young age. :) |

i think ive seen opal lie down about 3 times since ive had him(almost a year) once i went up to the yard at lunchtime, everyone had gone home for lunch and the horses were in for the day as it was raining so much the fields were like soup, it was so quiet in the barn and I went round the corner and there he was lying down as was every other horse in there- about 10horses. it was a lovely sight to see them all so relaxed i took some pictures on my phone but they didnt come out as the light was too dark |

I quite often catch my stallion, Taj, laying down when I do the late night check. He uses his straw bank as a pillow!!! He never bothers to get up, he just looks at me as if to say "Why are you disturbing my beauty sleep?" I must remember to take my camera out with me and get a piccy. He is also happy for me to sit with him and give him a cuddle, I feel quite honoured as I have only had him since late October.

The advantages of having the horses at home means that I don't miss out when they are lying down. My lot are rather lazy too, the often have an afternoon nap in the field
It was only last week that I was able to catch Minuette lying down (I purchased her in September) It was lovely to be able to walk right up to her and sit with her. It really meant alot as it has taken a while for us to bond but we have now got there
Years ago, we had a driving cob mare that used to snore her head off and wouldn't wake up for anyone. You had to skip out around her |

Cant believe I am missing out. I can even see most of his paddock from my bedroom window (with binoculars)but never catch him. I know he does lay down because of the flattened mud and its conveniently placed next to 3 flattened patched the other side of the fence where his friends have laid - but always overnight! Occasionally if he is in by day I have heard him getting up as I arrive but no matter how I sneak around I always miss it. I think only one person on the yard has ever seen him lying down.
When you say "its nice they are so relaxed" makes me feel perhaps Freddie isnt as happy as I thought! POOH!!! Sandie |

Shida never lies down in her stable which is great from a cleanliness point of view especially being grey but it's a shame she never relaxes enough in her stable (she is very territorial as well). When she lived out for the Summer she would lie down in the field though but unfortunately she can't live out anymore. |

Sandie, I am sure that Freddie is relaxed. He is just more keen to see his mummy than most of ours
Seriously though, if you look into the natural behaviour of a horse, they tend to do more sleeping during the day than at night. It is safer for them.
You could set the time by my horses. 11am - nap for 20/30 mins, then eat. 1pm - another nap, then eat. 3pm - 15 min nap.
They really are creatures of habit |

I am going to have serious words with him!! I am sure he wouldn't want me missing out on these "special moments" if he knew lol!!! Lisa,(lovely pics) I think Freddie is always the one standing up lol! He does take a lot of naps and I see him stood up head down always around the water trough. He seldom see tell tale signs of him having laid down in the field but I know nearly everytime he is stabled he is stretched out for England by all the pooh stains! Perhaps I should be thankful that he feels so safe in his stable, even when he is the only horse in - he crashes!

Sandie, he sounds just like my Trio - perfectly relaxed and happy with you, just doesn't want to miss out on anything so only goes down when no ones around |

Sandie, you're not alone!! I've never seen Shah lie down either. He rolls in the field, I know that from the mud, and he must lie down in the stables as he has poo stains - but I imagine Shah saying why nap when you can eat |

My lot spent lots of time lying down - they are so relaxed! I can go & sit on/with most of them when they are down & they don't move! Sly is lovely because I sit between his front legs leaning against him with his head over my shoulder we can spend ages like that having a good old natter & putting the world to rights! Thats the joy of having them at home!

Freddie must be tarred with the same brush as Shah and Trio - determined not to miss anything and will only crash out when there's nothing to miss! As for the cctv - my son works for a security company so perhaps he can rustle something up. On the other hand you never know if I give it a few more years Freddie may end up doing it when he's an OAP!

I catch Quinn laying down quite often. I took this one of him this time last year. I've caught Merlyn laying fast asleep in the stable on several occasions too. Just the luck of the draw I guess

When I used to do morning feeds on our yard, I'd creep into the barn, lights out commando style (usually tripping over buckets and haynets!) To catch Honey lying down I'd literally have to peep over the edge of the stable door, but if she heard or saw me first she's up quick as lightening! Only got one pic of her snoozing in the field..caught her one morning at 6am on our way to a show
