With much sadness I wish to inform the Arabian Horse community of the death of Mrs. Hilda Hayward formerly of Tadsor Arabian Stud, Ticknall, Derbyshire, earlier this week.
Many ALiners will perhaps only have known of Hilda in her latter years when ill health and stubborness resulted in adversity with her beloved Arabians.
I was fortunate to have known Hilda and her husband Leslie from the age of 6 when I was taken to Tadsor Stud in its heyday during the early 70s. It was Hilda and Leslie who introduced me to the Arabian horse and especially the Crabbet and old English lines of which I am still passionate about.
Many people will have forgotten what true Ambassadors and promoters of the Arab the Haywards were.
Rikki, Khada, Sultans (AA) and Al Kahira were all ridden with great success at the Horse of the Year show in the 70s.
The foundation mare of the stud was a beautiful, gentle bay mare Radiance (Bright Shadow x Summerhill) who founded a dynasty in her own right. She was the the most gracious of mares, and even though I only ever knew her in her senior years, she was always such a special mare.
Hilda herself was an eccentric lady of great spirit and kindness, she did not resign herself to a comfortable old age and lived in adversity for some years.
I would just like to thank her for showing me how wonderful the Arabian horse was, for inspiring my life long love of Arab horses, and for being so kind to a horsemade child.
I hope to leave some positive memories of Hilda and her much loved horses, there is not anyone who could have been more devoted than she.
Thank you Hilda - may you find peace with your beloved horses.

Very sad news indeed Azara. Tadsor was my introduction to the wonderful Arabian Horse. I remember Leslie and Hilda in the 70's and 80's. I was able to send my part bred mare to visit El Attorlando in 1976. The resulting foal EMANDO is 30 this year and looking happy and well. Thankyou Hilda and Leslie for your kindness to me a then horsemad teenager. I had the honour of riding both Rikki and Khada in their paddocks without saddle or bridle. Such gentle animals. Radience was 27 years old at the time with her last foal at foot. A lovely mare. I now own a bay Bright Shadow grandaughter, so reminecient of her. my other mare Zara has Summerhill in her pedigree. Tadsor was obviously a great influence for me. God Bless you Hilda, I hope you are now reunited with Leslie and your great deceased arabians.

Zara, I wonder if we ever met?? I too rode Rikki and Khada bareback in the fields and also the chestnut gelding Rani. Radiance was the most beautiful mare with the most incredibly soft coat. I remember Leslie throwing up onto Don (El Attorlando) whilst he was in his paddock, although my special friend was always Daro, his son. (El Darolando) I halter broke Berooq - he was the gentlest and sweetest of horses - ah! Happy Days....
I am so glad there is someone else who has positive memories of Tadsor and the great influential stud it was in the 60s and 70s.
If there are any ALiners who own Tadsor horses or Tadsor bred stock, please could you get in touch - looking to do an article on Tadsor for the AHS news.
The funeral is at Bretby Crematorium, 10.30 a.m. |

I also met Hilda when Radiance's offspring including Radoma were at Tadsor. Radoma was then 26 or 27 and despite not carrying much condition was flawless, still a level back and tail carriage and good limbs. Our very first mare was bred at Tadsor, we have her daughter now, and after visitng there bought Radoma's granddaughter as a foal, shes now 12 with her own first foal at foot who promises to be every inch a ridden horse.
Sorry to hear about Hilda, she had some rough times in her later years and was shunned by some of the AHS heirarchy. The old AHS publications have write ups n their open days, hundreds of visitors!

I personally heard of Hilda only in her later years, which is sad, but Chris Hartley, and Jill Duffin have told me of the wonderful times they had at Tadsor. They said they were some of the best days ever, magical infact. I will let them know. They will be very sad about this.
Rest well Hilda.
