I just want inform everyone that I lost my beloved mare yesterday through Laminitis.
She fought a very brave battle to the end with this dreaded illness, its awful. She suffered with it on and off for 11 years and the last year she was getting it more frequent. Me, my vet and farrier tried our hardest and she did aswell to save her from it.
She got it again about a month ago and it hit her very hard, she was in a lot of pain the last week being on 4 bute a day and I couldnt see her go through it anymore.
She was such a free spirit and to keep her confined to her stable was not an option for me or her.
She had her last day out in the field yesterday in the glorious sunshine with her beloved son Kazbah and she really enjoyed herself, but it took its toll on her by mid afternoon and she was put to sleep with her Kazbah by her side and she went very peacefully.
I loved her so much and she was my best friend was 17 years but she has left me with Kazbah who I treasure, he is distraught at the moment even though he was with her and saw it happen, I just hope he can get over it in time.
I know now she is running free from pain and that is all I ever wanted for her.
God bless you Swirly I will miss you so much.
*You'll never walk alone*
xxxxxxxxxx

I'm so sorry for your loss of such a lovely mare, but how brave you both were. I hope you and Kazbah can find comfort in each other.

Its a rotton, rotton illness, where there seems to be no pattern these days.
I am really sorry for your loss, but you did the right thing by her if she was having more bad days than good, and more in pain, than not.
Thinking of you.

Janet I am so sorry . I have followed your postings on here and feel as though I knew her too. She is out of pain now and you've got to remember the 17 years you had with her. Kazbah will come round - after all, he has you thank goodness. Bless you for putting all the effort into making her life as comfortable as possible and a giving her a dignified, peaceful end . You were lucky to have one another.
Thinking of you

Poor you; how really upsetting. It was very brave and kind of you to take that awful decision to put her out of her pain. I'm sure you will find huge solace in Kazbah and will enjoy the best memories of Swirl.

Hiya Janet
Even typing this I've got a ruddy huge lump in my throat - she was such a massive part of your life , and mine too - it's because of her I got my first arab !!! the things she put us through over the years are what will make us laugh later on
I know how much you've struggled with your decision over this last few weeks and have always put her welfare first which is all they can ask of us - she could not have had a better home, Kazzy will settle down in a few days bless him. I've told all the girls at the farm and they all send their love, Jen was upset obviously and wanted to send a big love to you both
Lots of love and hugs

Thanks everyone, it does make a difference.
Thanks Sal for being there for me yesterday, and yes in a while I will laugh at the things the little madam put me through, my pal said this morning, "I can see her now at the pearly gates saying *Right thats it I'm here now, I'm the boss, you do as I say not what you want to do*" She might have only beeen 14.1 and a little bit but she didnt stand for any messing did she, wether they were 12.2 or 17.2
Pat it is so true about Laminitis its dreadful and my vet said yesterday its fact now that Laminitis is the biggest killer in horses today, it kills more horses than colic does, and he says it very worrying.
I did the right thing yesterday, I would never have forgiven myself if I ever found her in distress, her sole had softened since last week and thats not a good sign at all, it was only a matter of time before the pedal bone would have come through, it could have been days away really.
She had a lovely day out in the field and she managed to eat enough grass to fill a shire horse, so I am glad of that, she went doing what she liked the best, out in the field in the sunshine eating grass with Kazbah.
Thanks everyone I really appreciate it.
Janet
