Hi
One of our fillys has had a slight nose bleed scince yesterday, her nose is quite swollen and she has had no obvious knock or bump to the head. I had the vet out yesterday and he is not quite sure whats causing the nose bleed from both nostrils! Its no a great amount of blood but a constant trickle, got the vet coming again shortly to check her again as it hasn't stopped.
Have any of you come across this before?
She has had no previous nose bleeds and is on a shavings bed with good quality hay.

I have only experienced my old girl having a small nosebleed last year but it was only for about half an hour and only from one nostril which the vet wasn't unduly worried about. She has had no problems since.
I hope the vet can find out what it is, I would imagine that as it has been a constant trickle AND from both nostrils, that it needs further investigation.
It must be worrying, let us know how you get on with the vet. |

I've had bleeds with two Arabs - both very fit endurance horses - according to the Vet - common in fit racehorses! the one was just that - a fit horse - the other Arab - fit - but it turned out that he had had a nasty infection a couple of inches up the one nostril - we had had no outward signs with him that there was anything wrong - it took mega doses of anti-biotics to clear it up & he was off work for ages.
Sorry - no help for what you are looking at with your filly - but it sounds suspiciously like she's had a head/nose injury?
Keeping everything crossed for her & that you sort it out quickly.

Hi
Well had the vet back out this afternoon and he took some swabs he thinks it might be some sort of infection so hopefully the swabs will reveal something so we can treat it in the mean time she has some sachets of trim to help.
Hi Judith, he did say it was common problem in racehorses but i'm pretty certain she hasn't bumped her head especially as the blood is coming from both nostrils.
Just hope it clears soon |

Hope it clears up soon!
The only anti-biotics that would touch the infection up Jets nostril were ones normally used to treet infections in birds!!! I've always said Jets a bit "quackers"!!

The bleeding that your vet is referring to in Racehorses is due to exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhageing. (EIPH), basically means bleeding from blood vessels within the lung and is usually seen after intense exercise.
I did an assignment on it for equine studies. It was quite interesting.
Hope you get to the bottom of it

Hi Leigh-ann
Jay had one a few years back, and I think it was stress, because I had left him out longer than normal (normally in at 5-6 o'clock) this was ten at night he got worked up and had a huge nosebleed, never had one since thankfully so I am careful with his routine.

Hi and thanks for the info
I have just been down to feed and turn her out and no signs of blood this morning but slight dirty nose so looks like it might be an infection. She is a lot brighter this morning and looking slightly less puffy around her nose.
I will let you know the vets findings.
The way the weather has been latley i'm not surprised if its not a cold as one miniute its warm and the next its freezing!!!!!!!!!! |

Hi Leigh-Ann, Hope your filly gets better soon and you find out whats wrong with her. Had to get the vet to Poppy last week! She hurt her hock. But got them moved out of that dreaded livery yard and our all now happily munching in grass up to their knees!!! |
