I fully intend on having all of my boxes 'rubber matted' by next winter. I have two on rubber mates at the moment and 6 boxes left to do. At the moment I use straw but we don't have a lot of room and I find that the muck heap just gets gigantic so quickly! Also, we live in a residential area, my house is at the end of a cul-de-sac, we are the only house with horses, so I am aware of the smell that straw (especially a wet straw muck heap) makes when considering our neighbours!
Seems a silly question but does it drastically reduce the size of the muck heap? How does it smell? Also, I have one mare that doesn't sleep she walks around the bed making mush all day, how would it work for her?

Heather - out of interest
I foaled last year on "nezbed" which is medicated chopped straw. (i use the "pro" one which is rape straw)
I mucked it out "properly" everyday - you know down to the bottom and under the banks - just as i would with straw.
I decided to try it - as every year went i have switched my mare into the foaling box (from shavings to Straw) - no matter how "good" the straw was she developed a cough (not a major one - but not nice in the last few weeks prior foaling!)
Any how it was fantastic - quite expensive as i put about 15 bales down, and hard work to muck out every day (but then my foaling straw beds are hard work as i usually put about 8 bales down to start, and then a bale a day)
But it created a lovely "deep" soft bed that didn't move about like straw does, and baby found it so easy to stand up on.
Anyhow that was my "experience" with something different to straw. - needless to say i will be using it again this year. |
