Is anyone else waiting for foals to be born? Rain changes shape every day and every day I think it will be tonight so off I trundle with my torch and she just looks at me like I've taken leave of my senses and what's all the fuss about!

Oh yes, 3 weeks and 1 day to go and it's very exciting and special! Have dreamed for 34 years about having horses at home and last week my dream came true. My lovely Simeon Sasdik daughter and pony for kids arrived to lots of mud but a very happy me!
My vet have recommended a kit that you can buy to test the mare's milk for calcium (which rises steeply when the birth is imminent), has anyone tried it?
Thanks |

Your vet is talking about a refractometer. They are very easy to use and cost about £120. You will find them if you search the internet.
I used one to great advantage last year with a mare who was an unknown quantity as to when she would foal or how she would progress to delivery. You can test the colostrum with the meter before milk starts to run for immunoglobins (IgG). The mare in question had tested just above normal at 4.00 pm, at 8.00 pm the IGG levels had risen to very high which indicates an imminent delivery (no milk just clear fluid)the mare delivered within 30 minutes.
The test consists of taking a sample of the colostrum and looking through an eye piece. There is a gauge which indicates the measurement of IgG on a scale.
I would recommend the refractometer, it really assists in making a judgement about delivery. You obviously cannot be complacent and must make the other observations about your mare and her condition, but it is reassuring even if only to know that the foal is on the way and you can make preparations.
The other use the meter has is to give you a clear idea of the quality of the colostrum and milk being produced. It can be an early indicator of when you may need to use plasma on your new born foal.
Would not be without one.

I have a non-arab due on 5th may. Mum is an arabx and dad is a paint horse so very excited.
I use the good old sleep in a caravan with a foaling alarm method. |

Good luck Lisa, Can't wait to see it. Give me a ring when Rain foals. We are moving back to Cornwall in May - near Colliford Lake, so not too far from you. |

Jane's keeping me guessing this time. She looks in foal but I can't feel anything kicking. She's due 22nd March but she could go over. I suppose I will have to wait and see.

I am sooooo jealous, I wish I was foal watching, but I decided my sons needed a well deserved and long awaited holiday to America this year, before they get too old to enjoy going away with Mum and Dad. So I chose not to put any mares in foal (I hate to leave anyone the responsibility of looking after my babes when I'm so far away).
But I am, hopefully, going to put 3 in foal for next year, yippee.
I am with you all in spirit though, good luck with all those beautiful babes.
Carla, xx. |
