hi i have an full bred 5 1/2yr arab- saki-and wonder if anyone has advice on saddles for him.I have tried about 10 from my on yard tackshop with no success. he is very flatbacked with low withers but has an underneath like a barrel. my husband has got an ex-racer and no-one around us has arabs and i've never had much to do with them. I wonder if it's common and therefore i'mjust trying the wrong things. I've tried x-wide wintecs and well worn leather wide saddles but i'm getting desperate !!thanks

An alternative could be a treeless saddle,A couple of girls I know in endurance have these for their flat backed arabs, indeed quite a few people use these in endurance, you could do a search for treeless saddles' there are a few different makes around. Perhaps someone on this website may have one,and could give you an opinion. Makes known to me are Torsion, and Fitform. Good luck Linda

If you had a saddle fitted new on an eight year old horse who is eighteen in April will the saddle still be a good fit or will the horse have changed shape and require a re-fit so to speak? |

Lisa, i get my saddles checked twice a year. If he hasnt been working then he could have lost condition, so i would get it checked by a qualified saddle fitter just to be sure. |

Hi, Have you tried a Barnsby Pony Club GP? I have had numerous problems having a saddle fitted on my pure bred mare and this is the only saddle I have found that doesn't slip forward in canter, or roll from side to side causing a display which wouldn't look out of place in a rodeo!! I am now on my 6th saddle for this mare and I have to say this is by far and away the best and most comfortable that I have tried. My saddler also swears by them for Arabs, she says nothing can touch them and they suit the flat whithered and broad back of the Arab perfectly. Mine is a 17'' so you don't have to have a small bum either!!!!
I always have my saddles checked at least once a year. All those niggly problems you always put down to them being in season, not having been worked for a while or just being plain silly can often be down to the fact that the saddle is pinching, pressing on withers, or just needs a bit of extra flocking to accomadate for increased muscle tone or whatever. It's well worth the £25 or so call out fee to ensure your horse is comfortable and is able to do as you ask.
Good luck finding your saddle!!
Gemma

Hi Jo C,
I have had exactly the same problem - fitting a saddle to an Arab is a complete nightmare. In our tack room, we have an Ideal straight cut GP, an Arab Saddle Co GP and a Western saddle, only the Western fits all.
I bought a 2nd hand Wintec Dressage from my groom and it fits like a glove - on all of them - I don't move and it doesn't move!
I have just had the Equine Chiropractor out and he is also a qualified saddle fitter and will be coming back in spring to check all the saddles on all the horses and I have eventually made up my mind that I will trade in the Ideal and the Arab for a 2nd hand leather Dressage saddle, which I know will fit.
The saddle fitter said that Dressage saddles fit Arabs the best, as there is nothing to interfere with the movement of their shoulders and as some are very short-backed, you need a small seat, so that you are not giving the horse acupuncture on the kidneys when cantering! Also with a Dressage saddle, it keeps you in the correct position so there is no fidgeting around to get the correct positon once you have come back down to walk.
Good luck.

Definately have a look into treeless saddles. Esther's just bought one because Harry's arabian saddle company one had become borderline but it's the most comfortable, fantastic saddle I have had the pleasure of sitting on. The feel that you get when riding in it is brilliant, every little movement made is there for you to read and the difference in the feel it gives you is wonderful. Would highly recommend treeless!

Bah Humbug! Just because I have something to ride which doesn't have to crab because of structural problems! You forget, I haven't ridden anything other than Joe for 6 years, I'd be the same if it was a Heinz 57 pony or, god forbid, a Dutch warmblood.

glowing admiration of the saddle is but a short step away from acquiring an arab. By dint of popular opinion, you have been outed, Kerry. |

If you are going to get a treeless - a dartmoor is what Est's just bought and it's SOOOOOO comfy! Best saddle I've sat on in all my 24 years of riding
