Last time this was queried there was a big debate on showing in a treeless saddle.
Showing tradition dictates that a "traditional" saddle with a tree should be worn. Some judges may not be used to riding in a treeless and therefore may not be happy to ride a strange horse in a saddle they have never tried too. It is really up to you to give it a go I guess and see what happens. If you are doing unaffiliated showing where the judge generally doesn't ride then it may not matter as much although I don't think they look as neat as traditional saddles.

After the earlier discussion, this was discussed by the Actvities committee, and voted upon, it was decided that a "clearer rule needed to be put in place" - It is in the latest judges book, and will be in the AHS rules when they are updated.
it reads
57. Ridden Classes – horses should be presented in conventional and well maintained “English” tack. Saddles should have trees and horses must be conventionally bitted. – If a judge feels the equipment is unsuitable or unsafe, he/she may refuse to ride the horse. Showing is very "traditionalist", and we would like to maintain those traditions!

I agree that its good to get that sorted out and that showing should remain traditional. It wouldnt look good if everyone was riding round in all sorts of contraptions
I do think though that it would be good at the Riding Club and Pony Club shows if there were seperate classes for those who wanted to use natural horsemanship style tack. It would be more of an equitation class than a turnout/showing style class. The judge wouldnt be expected to ride of course

Tsk, pity about having to be in a conventional bit. I see their point, but I wish it would be possible to show in, for example, a plain dark Scawbrig (which I use). Especially as arabs so often have little mouths without much room for a bit.
