YO was chatting to me this evening and complimented me on the wee ginger ones condition. As we stood talking Honey flung her head up violently, which is something she started doing a couple of years ago. Theres never any reason for it, she'll just chuck her head up, and YO questioned why she did this. She has always to some extent tossed her head. When she was ridden and got excited she flung her head about so much how I avoided a broken nose I'll never know! In the field she 'rolls' her head full circle if shes having a mad half hour. She had her eyes checked when this 'episodes' first started and the vet seemed to think her sight was ok. She has had runny eyes for the past couple of years but he said this is purely down to her age. Just wondering if anyone else had exp this kind of behaviour in their oldies We just put it down to one of her funny quirks now

Anglo Arabs do it too The grey in my sig pics - Minuette - does it. She stretches her neck right up and then tilts her head to the side. It's not a quick movement though. I must take a photo of it.
I thought it was rather strange at first but she is very demonstrative in her feelings and she wrings her neck at my other horses when she wants them to follow or move away.
I think it adds to their character

Cheers guys Its always nice to be able to runs these things by people who understand! Shes always be very 'active' on the head front, but it does sometimes worry me, you know how we are with them Its so severe at times I feel I have to explain to people who don't know her that its just the way she is (and that I don't beat her!) Its funny on some counts to the extent that she has her own 'entrance' to the stable block. The front doorway is quite low and she bumped her nose once on a head flinging session, so YO opened up the back door, which is much higher. Shes like the queen mum, won't use the same door as the commoners |

mine does this and he is 7. he especially does it when he is loose schooled or running around the field- some one on my last yard said it was a dominance thing to tell the 'lesser' members of the herd to get behind him. he stopped doing it with me for a bit but we're in another naughty patch so he's started doing it to me again on the lunge too |

Obi has displayed bizarre behaviour in the field at times. I thought he was going senile at one time - but it is just him. LOL about the queen mum entrance. I can see that! |

Amelia does it too: a nice little head twirl. She often does it in the field after a mad dash about: slams on the brakes and does a complete whirligig with the head. When being ridden she sometimes sticks her nose in the air and sort of shimmies her head about. Very off-putting.
She helicopters her tail too.

My 6 year old pure bred does this too, especially when he is impatient, wants to go out in the field, and he is left behind in the stable, and when he comes in in the evening. It is almost an impatience thing with him. He never does it though when I ride him, thank goodness. Nicky |

My girl also will throw her head out and around in a circle
She usually does it after being ridden and turned out. I thought she was just stretching.
I didn't say anything, but when my friend saw it she immediately said "oh, typical arab, my mare used to do exactly the same"
Cute aren't they? |
